Submission Format:

For Task 1:
A formal report of around 1000 words with appropriate use of structure and referencing . This should
incorporate a design specification and project plan, which can be included as an annex to the report.
For Task 2:
A written evaluation of around 600 words, to include three potential design solutions with evidence of the use of
software in simulation/modelling/prototyping and a justification of a proposed final design solution.
The student should Include a Statement of Authenticity to be signed by students when submitting evidence for
assessment in Student Declaration Form.
Students can approach the tutor for formative assessment on 14-04-2020

Unit Learning Outcomes:

LO1. Plan a design solution and prepare an engineering design specification in response to a
stakeholder’s design brief and requirements.

LO2. Formulate possible technical solutions to address the student-prepared design specification.
Assignment Brief and Guidance:

Scenario:

You work as a design engineer trainee in a general mechanical and electronic engineering solutions
company in the UAE.

An old and established group of hospitals has its hospitals in many cities of the UAE with old system
of elevators. The management experiences difficulties with the load limit, wherein only 6 people can
use the elevators and the management wants to increase the maximum limit to 10 persons. There
are two elevators side by side of maximum capacity of 5 persons and these may be combined to
redesign to a maximum capacity of 10 persons. Moreover, there are issues with the sensors, and
controls. The doors close and open fast, and sometimes people get hurt because of this quick door
movement mechanism although there are old sensors. The elevators move up and down fast, and the
patients who use the escalators feel inconvenience. Also the mechanical spring supports at the base
of the elevators are not satisfactory and give more mechanical shock to the users. The hospital
management has approached your company to redesign the elevators and modify to suit the
requirements. Your manager has assigned to you the task of redesigning. You are requested to
develop a new and better design of elevators based on the customer design brief. You should carry
out the following tasks:

Prepare a design specification for the hospital elevator and explain the stake holders' influence in
preparing it. Evaluate the possible planning techniques in your design, choose a technique presenting
the reason for your choice, produce a project schedule with graphical illustrations. Also
demonstrate critical path analysis in your project plan to find the critical path and explain its uses
to minimise the project period and cost. Finally, compare and contrast the completed elevator
design specification against the relevant industry specification standards.

You have prepared the design specifications for elevator in hospital. Explore the analytical design
tools available, and apply suitable design techniques to produce possible designs. Apply the
modelling/simulation/prototyping techniques to develop appropriate design of elevators using an
appropriate software. Evaluate the proposed possible technical solutions, and choose the best
Elevator design based on their advantages, limitations and preferences applying suitable quantitative
and qualitative analyses.
