IS HISTORY NECESSARY?

ARGUMENTS FROM THE TEXT: RECOGNIZE RED FLAGS and UNDERSTAND PAST
GENERATIONS

History is known as the study of the past, but its true meaning does not end there; it
encapsulates themes that expose human decisions, actions, behaviors, and interactions. By all
means, it became an exceedingly necessary subject to be studied and understood. We can
affirm that History is mandatory to form an individual with a critical sense, to recognize “red
flags” and to understand past generations.
As mentioned in the text “8 Reasons Why It´s Essential To Study History”, by Jennifer
Houston, recognizing “red flags” is marked as essential because it can teach us valuable
lessons. “We can escape conflicts, wars, the Holocaust, the Holodomor, and many other
terrifying events that happened in the past.”. By studying the successes and failures of the
past, we may be able to learn from it and make decisions and predictions in our present lives.
The author also appoints that “We can’t change the present and the future without knowing
the past.”. This way, we can get different results and insights.
Understanding past generations offer us reasonable motives as to why somethings are
the way they are, why decisions were made, and rules created. For example, male chauvinism
is almost a historical legacy, appointing toxic masculinity over women; in modern times, we
still hear about it frequently, even though the law guarantees equal gender rights.
Finally, History is necessary for our lives because it allows one to exercise their critical
thinking skills, which are essential for all areas in life, and to recognize past facts and relate
them to today’s. History also helps us in many aspects, appealing to them to learn about
different cultures, societies, and languages.
