Rye Why might Holden call his twin sister old Phoebe? I think the reason why Holden refers to his younger
sister old Phoebe is she is very intelligent for her age, and has very mature conversations with other people.
The other reason that Holden calls his sister Old phoebe is because she acts more of an adult than a child.
Given from this quote “She always listens when you tell her something. And the funny part is she knows, half
of the time, what the hell you’re talking about. She really does.”(Salinger 167) You can understand that
Phoebe gets her nickname Old phoebe since she is more approached as an adult than as a child. And Judging
that Phoebe always listens no matter what you are talking about, that is the role of what an adult does.

An adult will always listen whenever you tell them something. Also adults tend to understand what people
talk about. What might the horse in the book cover symbolize? Holden watches Phoebe ride the horse on the
carousel. The horse on the carousel symbolizes children not growing up and preserving their innocence from
the adult world. This is exactly what Holden wants, he does not want children to grow up at all and wants to
preserve their innocence until they become adults. “The thing with kids is if they want to grab for the gold
ring, you have to let them do it, and not say anything. If they fall off, they fall off, but it’s bad if you say
anything to them.”(Salinger 211) Holden talks about protecting children from the adult world. He wants
children to be themselves and grab the gold ring, and not be told not to. After all, that is the best thing of
innocence, not knowing anything.

Why would the title be called The Catcher In The Rye? The reason why the title is called The Catcher In The
Rye is it emphasizes a poem called “It’s If a body meets a body coming through the rye’?”(Salinger 173).
Given from this poem you will understand that Holden is picturing all these little kids playing some game in
this big field of rye. And when Holden is standing on the edge of a cliff he has to catch all the kids if they
start to go over the cliff. When the kids don't know where they are going that is when Holden comes out of
nowhere and catches them. That is what Holden does all day, he would be the catcher in the rye. Holden
realizes it is crazy but it's the only thing he would enjoy doing. And the song he says he mismatches it to “if
a body catch a body comin through the rye” but the lyric is actually “if a body meet a body, coming
through the rye”.

And the song coming through the rye actually means having a romantic encounter in the fields. And this
leads to Holden wanting to catch all the children before they go into the adult world.
