Students will be able to identify the moral of the story through group discussion
and written feedback with 90% accuracy.
Students will be able to identify the characters, setting, and plot of the story by
completing a short answer written assessment with 90 % accuracy.
IV. Procedures
Introduce the book “The Day You Begin” to the class. Read the preview written
in the book sleeve. Ask the class to listen while I read and think about personal
experiences they can relate.
Ask/ and discuss some of the questions noted on the assessment section.
After discussion have students fill out their questions on the writing promt.
Following completion of their writing prompt have them get into groups of 4 to
share and compare their work and stories.
V. Materials
• The book, “The Day You Begin” By Jacqueline Woodson
• Paper
• Writing utensils
They will be instructed to group after individually fill out their work. This is a
chance for students to compare ideas and thoughts. This will increase
children’s language skills and understanding of diversity. Group time should
be approximately 15 minutes. Monitor group discussion and fluctuate group
time as needed.
VII. Modifications
Each group will have no more than one ELL student in the group. This will
encourage the ELL student to communicate and engage in English vocabulary
with fellow students.
Teacher needs to engage the ELL students in groups and make sure they are
contributing and participating.
VIII. Assessment
The student will be assessed by participation and through correct and
thoughtful responses to questions listed below. There are multiple questions
that are subjective, these will demonstrate a deeper understanding of the story.
