Objective:
Learn, play, and define what a round is
Play through Frère Jacques in a round form.
Procedure:
Ask students to turn to #81 on page 19
Have a look over of the piece
o Address the one measure repeat sign
Looks like a division symbol
o How does it work?
Play through the piece
o Ask if anyone needs help with any fingerings
Play through m. 5 to get it under the fingers
o Play measures 4-6 to solidify
o Ask everyone their comfort level
The teacher will break the class into four groups.
The teacher will ask if anyone would like to define a round
o If not, the teacher will explain the definition of a round:
o A round is when a group of musicians play the same piece but come in at
different times
Have everyone look at their music and identify where the numbers are
o Group 1: start at the beginning like normal
o Group 2: start when group 1 gets to m. 3
o Group 3: start when group 1 gets to m. 5
o Group 4: start when group 1 gets to m. 7
o MAKE SURE EACH GROUP STOPS WHEN THEY REACH THE END
Sing through the round – make sure to cue each group clearly
o Either use tu syllable, words, or solfege whichever they prefer
o Ask everyone their comfort level – see if we need to sing again
Play the round!
o Ask everyone their comfort level – see if we need to play through again
Play through again – switch parts
o 1-2,2-3,3-4,4-1
Play through the round again – allow students to pick their own number 1-4
Assessment
The teacher will informally assess the students by listening to them play the round on
their own. The teacher will be looking for correct entrances and endings to solidify and
understand the students’ understanding.
