Exercise 5 Chemical Safety

1. State the importance of SDS – safety data sheet to these group:

a. Employee
- that employees have both a need and a right to know the
hazards and identities of the chemicals they are exposed
to when working. They also need to know what
protective measures are available to prevent adverse
effects from occurring.

b. Employer
- To help employers provide safer workplaces for their
employees. When employees have information about the
chemicals being used, they can take steps to reduce
exposures, substitute less hazardous materials, and
establish proper work practices. These efforts will help
prevent the occurrence of work-related illnesses and
injuries caused by chemicals.

c. Emergency response team

- The use of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) to identify and
properly handle hazardous materials and as
implementation procedures and controls for workers
in the event of hazardous exposure.

Answer the following questions based on the Safety Data Sheet given &
CLASS regulation 2013 and Industrial Code of Practices (ICOP) Chemical
Classification & Hazard Communication2014 & 2019: -

2. Determine the classification of the chemical.

- Health hazard, class 2013.

- Acute toxicity, Oral (Category 3)
- Acute toxicity, Inhalation (Category 3)
- Acute toxicity, Dermal (Category 3)

Exercise 5 Chemical Safety

- Carcinogenicity (Category 2)
- Specific target organ toxicity - repeated exposure
(Category 1)
- Chronic aquatic toxicity (Category 3)
- Hazardous to the ozone layer (Category 1)

3. Your workplace received this chemical on 12 th April 2020 at concentration

of 75%. The supplier furnished them with Safety Data Sheet (SDS) as
attached. Create a label for a container of 100 litres and 25ml in capacity
from the information given in the SDS.
- Label
Carbon Tetrachloride

Ingredient and concentration: Tetrachloromethane (CAS No:56-23-5), 75%

excessively exposed to this chemical. State the sign and symptoms, if this
presumption is correct.
Sign and symptom of exposure: Vomiting, Diarrhoea, Abdominal
pain, Nausea, Dizziness, Headache, Damage to the eyes., Liver injury
may occur., Kidney injury may occur., Exposure to and/or
consumption of alcohol may increase toxic effects., Contact with
skin can cause:, Pain, Erythema, hyperemia.

5. Write the safe handling method of this chemical [safe work practices &
personal protective equipment]
Precautions for safe handling:
- Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Avoid inhalation of
vapour or mist.
- Wear suitable protective clothing and gloves. Wear
respiratory protection.
6. State the expiry date of SDS provided.

- 25 / 04 / 2017

7. Due to space constraint, management has decided to build a new storage

area for this chemical. Recommend the condition of storage area for this
chemical based on MSDS given.

Storage area: Store in cool place. Keep container tightly closed

in a dry and well-ventilated place. Containers which are opened must
be carefully resealed and kept upright to prevent leakage.

8. Determine the pictogram {according to CLASS, 2013} should be pasted on

the container and tanker for transportation.

9. Find the TLV 8-hr TWA / PEL /ceiling limit for the following chemicals.

b. benzene,
c. ethanol,
d. methylamine
e. formaldehyde
f. hydrogen chloride
