Arts Appreciation

Exercise 3

Art created as a social activity generally has a message or purpose and is typically intended to be
seen publicly, likely to reflect a community or a group of people. Art created as a single act may have a
function and also be publicly displayed, but that is not usually so or standard. Often times, single art may
seem arbitrarily viewed out of context, or maybe it’s just more about aesthetics.

The example of singular creative work is Salvador Dali’s Persistence of Memory an example of a
singular creative work in 1931. Whilst an example of art created as a social activity is the world’s largest
painting, still unnamed, created in Lahore , Pakistan, by more than one thousand students in 2012.
When it comes to contrasting these two pieces of work, there are a few distinctions. Size is one
apparent distinction between these paintings. Although the painting created by Pakistani students
measures over forty thousand square feet, the Persistence of Memory is not much larger than a sheet of
paper works from notebooks, which appear to be larger in shape, allowing many artists to contribute
better.

For both, the significance of art continually arises. These two forms are obviously relevant, but for
varying reasons. Social art tends to bring art to people, so it is often, but not always, more accessible in
both creation, location and subject. It also appears, both physically and in depth, to be larger in size. It is
most often designed with the intention of exchanging responses and thoughts with others about life. Art
created by a single artist can be just as powerful as collaborative pieces of work. A singular artist can
bring new perspectives and insight into things. It appears that single art is less restrained and more open
to controversy. It is perhaps more extensive, as singular art usually requires less planning and
preparation.

Of course, certain functions of art have been developed and can overlap as a social and singular
practice. Art communicates, so the message can be the same, and so will the appeal. It does not mean
that the intention can not be carried out only because it is done differently. Our desire for visual
interactions is fed by both things. Let’s hope both items are fascinating and make us think. Both things
often embellish a room, or enhance it. For the makers, both items serve as an activity.
