MECH2040 - Assignment 4

This document contains 4 questions about determining stresses and moments applied to beams with different cross-sectional shapes and materials. Question 1 asks to find the largest bending moment that can be applied to a wide-flange beam given an allowable stress. Question 2 asks to find the largest couple that can be applied to a nylon beam given different allowable stresses in tension and compression. Question 3 asks to find the maximum stress and radius of curvature of a steel bar given a couple applied about two different axes. Question 4 asks to determine the ratio of depth to width that results in minimum stress and maximum radius of curvature for a beam cut from a circular log.

Question 1 (25 pts)

Using an allowable stress of 155 MPa, determine the largest bending moment M that can be applied

to the wide-flange beam shown. Neglect the effect of fillets.

Question 2 (25 pts)

The beam shown is made of a nylon for which the allowable stress is 24 MPa in tension and 30 MPa

in compression. Determine the largest couple M that can be applied to the beam.

Question 3 (25 pts)

A 60-𝑁 ∙ 𝑚 couple is applied to the steel bar shown. (a) Assuming that the couple is applied about

the z axis as shown, determine the maximum stress and the radius of curvature of the bar. (b) Solve

part a, assuming that the couple is applied about the y axis. Use E=200 GPa.
Question 4 (25 pts)

A couple M will be applied to a beam of rectangular cross section that is to be sawed from a log of

circular cross section. Determine the ratio d/b for which (a) the maximum stress 𝜎𝑚 will be as

small as possible, (b) the radius of curvature of the beam will be maximum.
