Application of Robots in Radioactive Environment

The demand for the use of robots is growing and is widely used in the industry, but it is not
only used for having various advantages in automation among others. The application of
robots is important and necessary in nuclear plants. The use of robots is essential in these
types of environments to avoid contact with humans. There are many types of robots today
which can provide us with different types of results and applications, in our case finding the
right robot configuration is essential to have a clear idea of how the process of material
handling in radioactive environments will be. The radiation emitted by certain materials and
substances can cause different types of diseases such as cancer and leukemia. Today robots
are frequently used in the nuclear industry to perform automated and repetitive work or to
perform dangerous tasks that they are dangerous for humans. First, profitability is the
motivation to change from regular to automated worker system. Second, worker safety and
regulation are issues that should not be ignored. In nuclear science, protection of the workers
became a catalyst for the development of robotics. This document discusses the problem in
depth by studying the main radiation disasters that have occurred. Emphasis is also placed on
understanding the basic design and methodology of these robots. The future of these robots is
expected to reach a stage in which nuclear power plants have very less human intervention.
