COMPARISON

What is comparison?

As its name, we use comparison to compare things. We can use adjective and
adverb to make comparisons. There are two types of Comparison, comparative
and superlative.
1. Comparative
Comparative is the name for the grammar used when comparing two things. The
two basic ways to compare are using as .. as or than. Examples:
 I'm almost as good in math as in science.
 I find science more difficult than mathematics.
2. Superlative
Superlative is the name for grammar used to compare three or more. Examples:
✓ My sister is the tallest in our family.
✓ The most boring thing about ESL class is doing grammar exercises.
General Rules for Comparatives and Superlatives
How to write comparative sentence…

To form comparative sentences, use the comparative with the word "than."
Here are some examples:
 Fewer participants volunteered for the study than I had anticipated.
 Business school was less expensive than law school.
 His application was processed more quickly than he thought.
It is also possible to use "(not) as…as" to express similarity or differences. Here
are some examples:
 Reading is as enjoyable as writing.
 The results were as conclusive as in previous studies.
 Finding participants for the study was not as easy as I thought.
 Her level of expertise was not as extensive as her employer had hoped.
How to write superlative sentence…

To form superlative sentences, use the superlative with the word "the" + prefix
‘most’ or suffix –est. Here are some examples:
Formula : THE 1-syllable word + EST ....
e.g. Mt. Everest is the highest mountain in the world.

Formula : THE MOST 2/more-syllable .....


e.g. Two of the most important people in this room apparently are my family.
