Correction: I lived for ten years in Russia.

2. Rule: A preposition is a word or set of words that indicate either a location (in, on, near etc) or
another relationship between a noun and other parts of the sentence (instead of, about, after etc).
To indicate how long you have lived and where you have lived you should use the prepositions:
for/in.

3. Place the right preposition: at, on, to, by, for, but, because of in the correct sentence.

4. Example: He's swimming in the river.

(in is the correct preposition that indicates the place in which he was swimming).

5. Exercise:

Use the correct preposition: towards, on, for, by, at.

Correction-: I am an electrical engineer and work for a company who manufactures automatic
processing machines.

2. Rule: The time of the action is not implied/stated, therefore you should use the present perfect
tense. When the time of a past action (something that happened before) is stated clearly, use the
past.

3. In the following examples, decide whether the present simple or present continuous tense needs
to be used. Fill each gap accordingly with the correct verb in brackets.

4. Example:

Where did you live before? – I (live) in London during my college days.

Where did you live before? – I lived in London during my college days.

Correction: I arrived in Bath yesterday.

2. Rule: In English language, the word order is particularly important, because it can change the
entire meaning of the sentence, if not used correctly. The most common pattern in English is SVO-
Subject, Verb, Object. We first learn who or what the sentence is about, then we discover what the
person does or is.

3. Place the correct word order in the following sentences based on the above rule.

4. Example:

Error:  In this town there is a college (WO)where I’ll study English for two weeks.

Correction: There is a college in this town where I’ll study English for two weeks.
