Fashion is Art

Is fashion a form of art? Well, by definition fashion is a popular trend or the latest
style of clothing, hair, decoration or behavior, where as art is the expression or
application of human creative skill and imagination. I am pretty sure that I cannot be
the only person in this world who believes fashion is a form of expression and the
creation of style, shape, appearance, or mode of a structure, so why does the
Oxford Dictionary think otherwise?

As I precariously crouched by the magazine aisle in my local WH Smith’s today

flicking through Dazed & Confused making sure the water droplets from my iced
coffee didn’t taint the matte pages, I felt so frustrated. With the incredible clothes
and photographs that leave me speachless, how can someone easily claim that this
is not art? The fashion industry is overflowing with artists such as Alexander
McQueen, Christian Dior, Patrick Demarchelier, Grace Coddington and Carine
Roitfeld yet they are not appreciated on the same scale as say Marc Chagall.
Forgive me if I am wrong but isn’t photography or styling or designing an
“application of human creative skill”?

It’s the 21st century, the art world is constantly changing and anything and
everything is acceptable these day’s, just take Damien Hurst for example! Art is a
culture of no rules or regulation’s and what is a better way to express who you are
and how you feel than in they way you dress. Fashion is the most obtainable art we
can have in our day to day lives and through it, we discover things about ourselves
and others. So to anyone who claims “this is fashion, this is art” I would just like to
advise you to get yourself down to the Victoria and Albert Museum to educate you
in real art.
