Ruth Bader Ginsburg

She was born the 18th March 1933 in Brooklyn (NY). She worked in the Law as a judge and a lawyer
and was part of the U.S Supreme Court. She is from a Jewish family that emigrated from Russia to the
USA. She was a brilliant student and studied Law in Havard, she was one of the very few female
students. She had to work part time during her studies because she became mother and her husband
who supports her has the cancer (Martin D Ginsburg)

For nearly 50 years, she has led a legal fight for women’s rights, her specialty, in the United States.
Thanks to her academic results she will be one of the first women to join Harvard (she was forbidden
to them before 1950). Her husband, Martin Ginsburg, whom she met at Harvard and who will be a
major asset in her career. However despite prestigious studies she is not admitted to any New York
law firm because of her kind. She then embarked on a long and difficult struggle with feminism, but it
was essential.
She becomes a professor of law is a special case that will allow her to launch a rich and impressive
career: the case of Moritz v. It is on this one that the film Une Femme d'exception focuses. This case
seems little known but it is the one that best represents the determination of RBG to fight against
gender discrimination in laws and judgments

After graduation, even though she had a high qualification degree, she was being discriminated
against when looking for job. She then specialized herself into discrimination cases believing that it is
a very important issue in our society. She is also called “Notorious R.B.G”, in reference to “Notorious
B.I.G” a famous rapper. In 1993, Bill Clinton named her part of the US Supreme Court, the second
woman to be ever named into this institution (first was Sandra Day O’Connor). She faced cancer four
times already.

At the age of 85, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, better known by her initials RBG, has left her mark on
the history of the Supreme Court. A biopic inspired by her life, "An Exceptional Woman," is currently
on view. It was preceded by the excellent "Notorious RBG," an archive-rich documentary tracing her
career.  As for his nickname of "notorious RBG", it was given to him in 2013 by a student, in
reference to the famous rapper "notorious BIG".

Her detractors call her a "witch", a "zombie", "un-American"? President Trump has been tweeting
her, tweeting in support, ever since, in the middle of the election campaign, she called him an
"impostor"? Whatever, man. Her fans see her as a woman who changed the destiny of American
women. Even the modern incarnation of the Statue of Liberty. No less.

The US Supreme Court is part of the “checks and balance” system, the foundation of the US
government. The three powers are divided into three institution:

Executive power- President Legislative power-The Congress Judicial power-The Supreme Court

Each of these powers can go against another when there is a discord, which prevents any of them to
take the full power.
