What is EBP?

What is EBP?

Sports medicine combines general medical education with the specific principles of

sports science, exercise physiology, orthopedics, biomechanics, sports nutrition, sports

psychology, and evidence based practice, also known as EBP. Evidence based practice is

“making decisions about the clinical care of individual patients based on the current best

available evidence in the professional literature” (Prentice, 2011, p. 19). EBP also considers

patients’ unique needs and preferences. If used consistently, optimal patient outcomes are more

likely to be achieved (What Is Evidence 2016).

There are a number of EBP processes that have been developed to help health care

providers implement EBP in the workplace (What if Evidence 2016). The most common

processes follow these steps: Ask a question, Acquire a question, Appraise the literature, Apply

your findings to clinical-decision making, Evaluate your outcomes, and Disseminate the

information. In contrast to research, the purpose of EBP isn’t about developing new knowledge

or validating existing knowledge- it’s about translating the evidence and applying it to clinical

practice and decision making.
