Compose Now Lesson 4

The students learned what the term mood means and how it effected a work of art whether that
be a song, silent film, painting, or poetry. In the midst of returning to the keyboard lab, students
received time to improvise a small melody over an accompaniment with a set mood in place.
However, this time around the students didn’t have a work of art to base off of, so they just had
to use their imagination. In the video, students take the time to come up with a little tune and
then a couple of the students share their idea with the rest of the class based on the mood I
assigned them. This allows the students a chance to perform in front of their classmates using
their artistic skills.

There weren’t any adjustments made during the lesson, except for certain students who need
simplified directions so that they can still gain the knowledge but at the same time be successful.
Overall, everything went pretty smoothly and students were starting to catch onto the keyboard
functions without repetition which is awesome!

I monitored student learning during the lesson by walking around the room observing what the
students were creating to set a specific mood. I would always try to check in on every student,
but then there would be a couple who needed more help than others so I would focus my time
with them for the most part until they understood or others needed help. Based on the analyses
of student learning, I will address students’ learning needs during the next lesson by allocating
more time for students to come up with an idea on the spot. I believe it would increase the
amount of volunteers wanting to share instead of having to call on students.
