Creating a better environment
Of late, our committee has received many complaints regarding our apartment block. It seems that the
surroundings of our block has become an eyesore. Garbage has been strewn in every corner of the block.
Unwanted waste can be found along the corridors of each level and along the stairways, too.
Our committee would like to propose a few recommendations to make our block a more pleasant place
to live. We hope that all the residents will cooperate in giving a helping hand during the gotong-royong on 16
August 2020. Let’s not only keep our compound clean but also other parts of our block. We should not just rely
on the maintenance team. We should set a good example for the young to emulate.
Besides that, we also hope that the residents would start separating their garbage effective immediately.
Hence, we have organised a recycling campaign by placing recycling bins for paper, cans and plastics near the
elevator of every level of Block B.
1 Q-Bank Set 1
Additionally, there will be posters and buntings placed around our block to create awareness among the
residents of the importance of keeping our block clean at all times. This is also to educate children on the need
to maintain cleanliness and that poor hygiene habits will not be tolerated.
Our apartment allows the residents to keep pets. However, pet owners should carry plastic bags with them
while taking their pets for a walk in the playground. Please clean up after your pet has defecated and throw the
waste into the bins provided in the area. Also, do not let your pets stray around our block; keep them in your
homes.
Please do not hesitate to contact any of the committee members should you have any queries or need any
clarification. Your cooperation and effort to make our block a pleasant place to live is much appreciated. I will
do my best to look after the needs of the residents.
Best regards,
Jamilah Aziz

Okonkwo’s fame rested on solid personal achievements. As a young man of eighteen, he had brought honour to his
village by throwing Amalinze the Cat. Amalinze was the great wrestler who for seven years was unbeaten, from
Umuofia to Mbaino. He was called the Cat because his back would never touch the earth. It was this man that
Okonkwo threw in a fight which the old men agreed was one of the fiercest since the founder of their town engaged
a spirit of the wild for seven days and seven nights.
The drums beat and the flutes sang and the spectators held their breath. Amalinze was a wily craftsman, but
Okonkwo was as slippery as a fish in water. Every nerve and every muscle stood out on their arms, on their backs
and their thighs, and one almost heard them stretching to breaking point. In the end Okonkwo threw the Cat. That
was many years ago, twenty years or more, and during this time Okonkwo’s fame had grown like a bush-fire in the
harmattan.

Financial Aid Appeal
My name is Kimberly and I was recently accepted into Winchester College. I am very much looking forward
to attend the college this year. Thank you for providing me the details of the financial aid package. I am writing
to respectfully request consideration of appeal to review my financial aid award package.
I am delighted to be enrolled at WC and am thankful for the financial aid package that the college has
offered me. However, there is still a large financial gap for me to cover to be able to continue my studies at the
college despite the college’s generous offer.

14 “If I can grow a tomato, I can grow other things, too.”
15 “How much did that tomato plant cost you?”
16 “Never mind. That’s not the point.” 50
17 The tomato is amazing. She dreads to eat it, but is delighted by the juiciness of the taste, so much
richer than the flat, boring tomatoes she purchases at the grocery store. She starts contemplating the
possibility of growing enough food to feed her family. She has a huge backyard. She could start a
nice garden.
18 She could rear a few chickens and have eggs for protein. She could buy goats for milk. Imagine 55
living off the land. She once had a boyfriend who lived off the land when she was in college.
However, the only plant he was ever successful in cultivating was marijuana, the others ended up in
failure resulting in his frequent visit to her house for meals. But maybe he didn’t have her abilities.
Maybe he didn’t have her patience.

has been, how stressful her work is.
20 Nevertheless, he says,“I’d think you lost your mind.”

Review 1
“Christmas won’t be Christmas without any presents.” That’s the first sentence of Little Women, and I’m
happy to say that in this holiday season, the new movie version of Louisa May Alcott’s novel is true to its first
sentence which is indeed an absolute gift.
A whole Christmas stocking full, really. Written and directed by Greta Gerwig, this Little Women — the
latest of its many adaptations — embraces its source material with eager enthusiasm. It is good enough to
satisfy the book’s passionate lovers, who will recognise the work of a kindred spirit, while standing on its own
as an independent and inventive piece of contemporary popular culture. Without resorting to antiquarianism,
Gerwig has fashioned a story that feels at once entirely true to its nineteenth-century origins and yet, at the
same time, utterly modern.
Some of the freshness comes from the cast, a plethora of expansive young talent combined with a handful
of experienced old-timers. There is also an exuberance — an appetite for clothes, books, baked goods and
adventure — that effortlessly links then to the contemporary version. At the centre of the big scene, as she
was in Gerwig’s Lady Bird, is Saoirse Ronan. She plays Jo March, the second eldest of four sisters living in
Concord, Massachusetts, during and after the Civil War.
The four siblings are different in their attitudes and talents, inviting a mix-and-match game of identification
and infatuation. The oldest, Meg (Emma Watson), is theatrical and responsible; Beth (Eliza Scanlen) is musical
and sweet. The youngest sister, Amy (Florence Pugh), and Jo are a painter and a writer who are frequently at
odds. Before romance, tragedy and the ordinary pains of growing up complicate matters, they are an inseparable
if not always a harmonious troupe.

“Why, that is the richest girl in the parish.”
“So they say,” replied the peasant, stroking back his hair with one hand.
The priest entered the names in his book, without making any comments, and the men wrote their signatures
underneath. Thord laid three dollars on the table.
A fortnight later
The father and son were rowing across the lake, one calm, still day, to Storliden to make arrangements for the
wedding.
“This thwart is not secure,” said the son, and stood up to straighten the seat on which he was sitting. At the
same moment the board he was standing on slipped from under him; he threw out his arms, uttered a shriek, and
fell overboard.
“Take hold of the oar!” shouted the father, springing to his feet and holding out the oar.
But when the son had made a couple of efforts he grew stiff.
“Wait a moment!” cried the father, and began to row toward his son.
Then the son rolled over on his back, gave his father one long look, and sank.
Thord could scarcely believe it; he held the boat still, and stared at the spot where his son had gone down, as
though he must surely come to the surface again. There rose some bubbles, then some more, and finally one large
one that burst; and the lake lay there as smooth and bright as a mirror again.

I believe it is not difficult for every one of us to notice that the world is drowning in waste — rubbish, chemicals and
even nuclear waste. In the world’s seas and oceans, particularly, plastic waste has been accumulating at alarming
speeds, engulfing large swathes of water and choking marine life in the process. On land, too, there is way too
much waste, putting great strain on landfills.
We are all responsible for this sad state of affairs. Citizens across Malaysia have been generating large
amounts of food and plastic waste. Sadly, the trappings of surging wealth and economic prosperity have come with
the scourge of wasteful habits.
But we can change that. And the change must start at home for each of us.
For starters, we ought to start buying fewer things. We should buy new clothes, accessories and other disposable
items only when we truly need them. Conspicuous consumption is a threat to the health of the environment.

Part 5
Dyslexia is a common learning difficulty that can cause problems with reading, writing and spelling as people with
dyslexia have trouble processing words and numbers. Dyslexia is not a disease and it does not affect intelligence.
However, it often affects school grades because it is difficult to do well in exams if reading and writing are a
struggle.
What is it like to have dyslexia? People with dyslexia might have trouble reading even simple words.
21. _____________________. They might mix up the letters in a word — for example, reading the word “now” as
“won” or “left” as “felt”. Words may also blend together and spaces are lost.
22. ______________________. They may remember more easily when the same information is read to them
or they hear it. If they are doing a presentation in front of the class, they might have trouble finding the right words
or names for various objects. Spelling and writing usually are very hard for people with dyslexia.
Unfortunately, researchers have not yet pinpointed exactly what causes dyslexia. But they do know
that genes and heredity play a role. Dyslexia often runs in families. About 40 per cent of siblings of people
with dyslexia also struggle with reading. As many as 49 per cent of parents of kids with dyslexia have it, too.
23. __________________________.
Other than that, brain anatomy and activity may also cause dyslexia. Brain imaging studies have shown brain
differences between people with and without dyslexia. 24. _______________. Those skills are knowing how
sounds are represented in words, and recognising what written words look like. But the brain can change. Studies
show that brain activity in people with dyslexia changes after they get proper instruction or tutoring. And scientists
are learning more all the time.
Pertaining to diagnosis, the only way to know for sure if someone has dyslexia is through a full evaluation.
Professionals who can assess people for dyslexia include school psychologists, clinical psychologists, and
neuropsychologists. An evaluator will give a series of tests for dyslexia-like symptoms. Firstly, an IQ test is
performed followed by a reading test. 25. _______________.
A student with dyslexia should get more time to complete assignments or tests, permission to record class
lectures, or copies of lecture notes. 26. ________________________________. Computer software is also
available that “reads” printed material aloud.
People with dyslexia should not feel limited in their academic or career choices. Most colleges make special
accommodations for students with dyslexia, offering them trained tutors, learning aids, computer software,
recorded reading assignments, and special arrangements for exams. People with dyslexia can become doctors,
politicians, corporate executives, actors, musicians, artists, teachers, inventors, entrepreneurs, or whatever else
they choose. Many famous people with dyslexia have very successful careers in these and other fields, despite
having had reading struggles in school.
A. These differences happen in areas of the brain involved with key reading skills.
B. Using a computer with spelling checkers can be helpful for written assignments.
C. Scientists have also found genes linked to problems with reading and processing language.
D. They probably will read slowly and feel that they have to work extra hard.
E. People with dyslexia are not stupid or lazy as most of them have average or above average intelligence.
F. A dyslexic child would present with an average or above average IQ test result, but fare poorly in the
reading test.
G. They might have trouble remembering what they have read, too.

Dear students,
The Computer Science Department is conducting a research called Web Research (WR). This research is about
exploring the use of the Web among youths. In order to make this research a success, we need students in this
college to participate.
Since youths nowadays are exponentially using the Web for basically everything, we think that students
here would be perfect candidates to answer our questionnaires and participate in some short interviews. The
questionnaires have only 20 questions while the informal interview would take around 10 to 15 minutes to
finish as we are trying to get your opinions and thoughts about the use of the Web in your daily life in a leisurely
manner. The participants do not have to feel stressed when answering the questions in the interview. The

7 On the contrary, traumatic experiences leave a legacy of reminders that may persist for
years. These reminders are linked to aspects of the traumatic experience, its circumstances, and
its aftermath. Children may be reminded by persons, places, things, situations, anniversaries, or
by feelings such as renewed fear or sadness. Physical reactions can also serve as reminders, for
example, increased heart rate or bodily sensations. Identifying children’s responses to trauma and 50
loss reminders is an important tool for understanding how and why children’s distress, behaviour,
and functioning often fluctuate over time. Trauma and loss reminders can reverberate within
families, among friends, in schools, and across communities in ways that can powerfully influence
the ability of children, families, and communities to recover. Addressing trauma and loss reminders
is critical to enhancing ongoing adjustment. 55
