In the United Kingdom, there are mainly two types of newspapers, namely Quality
Papers and Tabloids. Although the two types are very popular, there are many
differences between them. Some differences are, for example, layout, language,
reliability, photos/cutlines, headlines, and overall ton. And we will address the
different approaches on Meghan and Harry’s interview to understand better these
differences.

In the Daily Mail, on the 8 th of March, we can only see an image of Queen Elizabeth and
Meghan, positioned to convey an atmosphere of confrontation and tension, due to
Meghan and Harry having decided not to be involved in the affairs of the royal family.
In this newspaper there is usually a lot of color and the images are highlighted,
occupying 25% of the area.

On the cover of I of the 8th of March, the most evident image is related to vaccination,
due to the pandemic, but it also has images and articles related to women, because it
was International Women's Day.

On March 9th I’s cover, the most evident image shows Harry and Meghan during an
interview, however, isn’t intended to convey an atmosphere of confrontation, but to
expose the population to the situation that was really going on, without wanting to
generate confusion and controversial. Unlike Daily Mail, about 10% of the total area of
the paper taken up by pictures in this newspaper.

Palavras em destaque (Henrique)

On the front page of newspapers, the most predominant words – headlines –

summarize the main idea and are essential to attract the reader's attention.

In the Daily Mail, there are two phrases that stand out the most. One is: “Duty means
everything”, in which the Queen highlights the importance of duty and obligations as
members of the royal family, and also delivered a powerful message about dedication
to duty, as well. The other is: “The royals face fallout from Meghan and Harry’s
bombshell interview…”, this means, in this interview the couple made unbelievable
revelations about the royal family, what was a shock for them. Unlike newspaper I, the
headlines are much bigger also in order to be more appealing, which in the end is what
they want.

On i of 8th of March, the phrase that stands out is: “UK’s vaccine creator calls for
caution as pupils return”. The creator of the vaccine calls for responsibility and caution
regarding returning to schools. Although, to the problematic situation between Harry
and Meghan, and the royal family, the newspaper didn’t stop worrying and reporting
on international issues of great importance, such as the situation of Covid-19.

On March 9, the headline is large enough and simple: “Palace in crisis talks over racism
allegation”. Just as in the newspaper Daily Mail, the main theme is the interview of
Harry and Meghan in which they talk about the pressures to which they were subjected
by royalty. This sentence shows the tension that is growing up in the palace to release a
statement, because of a disclosure that the couple made, which said that a member of
the royal family questioned the color of the baby that was about to be born, and in
contrast to this, we can see that Daily Mail is more sensational, because it’s giving
importance to disagreements between monarchial family and the content is offensive
and disrespectful.

Corpo da notícia (Palavras pequenas) (Beatriz)

In a magazine, the small words are the body text, containing extra information, such as
the opinions of the people involved and explanations, but which complements the
most prominent words and the images present.

In the Daily Mail magazine, the language is very subjective and colloquial, ending up
generating different opinions among readers, dramatizing, and exaggerating the ideas
transmitted, while in magazine i, the language is more objective and concise, and the
vocabulary is more extensive and formal. The paragraphs are simpler and more
organized and are based on reliable facts and accurate information, in addition to
being aware of the consequences that they send to the target audience with the
information they transmit, since they were careful to only expose that subject for a few
days after the interview, hence the magazine i is considered the best.

Conclusão: Do Tabloids criate a toxic environment? (Beatriz)

With the cover of these magazines, especially the cover of the Daily Mail magazine, we
were able to conclude that tabloids sometimes create toxic environments, as they
create unnecessary controversies, which often don’t correspond to the truth and have
no basis, as well as they blow the credibility of people, and have a lot of impact on their
life and well-being.
