Abstract

Psychology has been used for many years to understand the mind and behavior of

humans. Throughout this study, key focuses of investigation are physical, emotional,

philosophical, social and intellectual development. As one ages, it is important to see where their

developmental skills are as compared to those of others in their age group. For this PEPSI

screening, Aubrey Marquez, a close family friend, was selected. She is 13 years old and attends

public school, she is also the youngest child of three kids and represents a diverse development.

Several things can be noted about development such as the way one interacts with others or their

intellectuality and personal drive.

PEPSI Screening

Physical, emotional, philosophical, social and intellectual development impact the way a

human interacts amongst society. There are many reasons as to why there are studies done

amongst several individuals, for example, children who come from different parts of the world

and even families develop different beliefs, cultures, hobbies, and more. Through experience,

observation, and reflection, it will examine the socially transmitted beliefs, values, institutions,

behaviors, traditions and way of life of an individual.

Participants

Aubrey Marquez is a 13-year-old girl born on June 23, 2007. She is the youngest of three

daughters and was raised by a single father. She is currently in eighth grade and is extremely

athletic, intelligent, and outgoing. She represented a good participant as she has experienced lots

of different things in her life. She was born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada, and has lived here

her entire life. She has a sister who is 19 years old and a sister who is 18 years old, which allow
her to be exposed to maturity, and learn faster than her peers. In her early years, Aubrey had a

rough upbringing due to family drama. Her mother left them at a very young age and then had a

baby a couple months after leaving. Her father had severe jealousy and trusting issues which

would constantly lead into fighting in the house. One day the fighting got extremely bad, to a

point where the father ended up putting hands on the mother causing him to stay a couple of

nights in jail. From there, the mother took off and never tried contacting her kids till after she had

a whole new family. As to that day, the father realized he had to provide a better life for his three

girls and become their positive role model. Due to Aubrey’s two older sisters, she was able to

learn right from wrong and had two females to always guide her. The family is in the upper

middle class and her father works a full-time job to support the girls and pay the bills for the

house.

Assessments and Measures

In order to understand the PEPSI screening, we must start by elaborating on the

acronym's composition. Physical development can’t necessarily be measured accurately, as

everyone grows and develops differently, however some things that are measurable are things

like height, weight, when the body has begun puberty, and things like that. According to, Teen

Child Development, "Puberty involves a series of physical stages or steps that lead to the

achievement of fertility and the development of the so-called secondary sex characteristics, the

physical features associated with adult males and females (such as the growth of pubic hair).

While puberty involves a series of biological, or physical, transformations, the process can also

have an effect on the psychosocial and emotional development of the adolescent” (John Mersch,

MD). In terms of my participant, she weighs within the normal percentile of other girls her age.

She is 5 feet 7 inches tall and is above average. According to the Center for Disease Control and
Prevention, “Based on the height and weight entered, the BMI is 15.5, placing the BMI-for-age

at the 6th percentile for girls aged 13 years. This child has healthy weight.”

Emotional development during pubescent years is a difficult period for some to navigate

as hormones are changing as well as bodies. When trying to understand someone this young it is

quite difficult, communication begins to change as well as temperament. Aubrey is lucky to have

two older sisters to help her navigate through this time in her life. Feelings and thoughts at this

age begin to change and reach new depths. She has been exposed to some trauma growing up

without a mother but luckily her two sisters helped her along the way.

Philosophical development often begins at home. It is often found that many

philosophical and moral beliefs are established due to family teachings and practices. Many

parents influence their children’s views on the world, as the parents are idols in a child's eyes. As

one matures, they begin to establish their own thinking and beliefs, while also keeping a piece of

their parent's ideals in mind.

Social development is necessary to interact in the world. Through teenage years social

interaction is essential to maintaining happiness and developing independence. Hanging out at a

friend's house and going out in public helps develop responsibility and self-sufficiency. Social

scenes allow for new friendships to occur and broaden horizons.

Intellectuality is a key part of knowing who someone truly is. An intellectual is defined as

someone with the ability to understand objectively with regard to abstract or academic matters,

or in more simple words, a way to think. Intellectuality allows for one to interact with others

with a way of having reason and understanding for all beliefs belonging to someone, whether

they agree or not. Tolerance goes hand in hand with intellectuality development as everyone
must learn to tolerate the thoughts and ideas surrounding them. From a young age most, people

learn to think for themselves and express their ideas, thoughts, wishes, and whatever else may

come to mind. Developing thoughts, ideas, and feelings are all important to individuality and

help to study where one goes through certain stages and set the tone for what is expected to be

normal amongst society.

Results

After gathering all the information needed about Aubrey, it was found that her physical,

emotional, philosophical, social, and intellectual development were all very interesting to learn

and dive into. Her family life is very impactful and was very important in molding her into who

she is today.

Outcome 1

Aubrey is in no need of any extra assistance or aide as she is beyond the limits. She excels in

nearly every category and will continue to do so well into her adult years.

Outcome 2

Aubrey is no concern in terms of developmental delay or weakness. She is able to support

herself and understand the world at a young age. She has learned lots of responsibility and

maturity and carries herself with lots of intelligence, the graph included also represents where

Aubrey falls, 5 representing above average, 3 representing normal, and anything lower would

have represented below average, however this participant ranked normal to above average in

every aspect.

Discussion
After reviewing these studies and comparing them to Aubrey’s results it is found that she does

in fact place within her age group at a normal to above average development rate. She is very

mature for a 13-year-old girl and excels in all aspects of her life. We can see this as demonstrated

by a bar graph shown below, it represents her personal PEPSI screening and where it lies

amongst the “normal” statistics. She demonstrates extreme maturity and critical thinking skills

for a girl her age, she is a very caring and nurturing person and carries herself very well for only

being 13 years old. Lots of children learn different things about life at very different paces and

that can impact some drastically. The PEPSI screening is very eye opening as it allows for an

analysis of an individual in a subtle way. Seeing where someone lies in terms of where they are

“expected” to be is an interesting way to see how much someone can possess in their mind.
