The most accurate and reliable measurement method is the Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry,

Skinfold measurements. The DEXA scan utilizes dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). The

test looks beyond your weight and the traditional body mass index (BMI). It determines your

total body fat percentage, total fat mass and fat-free mass. Most importantly, DEXA body

composition technology provides regional body fat results (trunk, arms, legs, pelvis and

android/gynoid regions). A DEXA scan can also measure visceral fat / abdominal fat, which is

often associated with increased risk for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. DEXA results

often include bone density as well (bone mineral density - BMD). The least reliable is the BMI.

It is only reliable for obesity. Skinfold measurements calculate body fat percentage. They are

quite easy to use. The hardest part is finding the right locations to pinch. BMI doesn’t calculate

body fat so it can’t make allowances for muscular development. BMI oversimplifies health and

mortality prediction and ignores important factors that contribute to good health. BMI does not

consider age, ethnicity, level of physical activity - these factors are all essential in understanding

body composition and health risk. Body composition describes the amount of fat, bone, water,

and muscle in the body. Measuring your body composition will tell you your own body's unique

makeup and help you identify areas to work on to improve your overall health and wellness.
