Problem/Question:

 assessing the speed of thought by measuring how long it took the participants of Wundt
to make a judgement

 Measuring discrepancies between the actual and perceived position of a pendulum and
inferred that these numbers represented the speed of thought

Methods
 Participants of Wundt were asked to indicate the relative position of either a rotating
clock arm or swinging pendulum or in most case the sound of a bell

 Afterward; they would do the opposite where they have to indicate at which point in a
song a light came on

Results
 He found that the reaction of his participants was significantly longer when the stimulus
was present virtually

 The average time for a human to react to an event was about 1/8 of a second

Conclusion
 That seeing the pendulum and hearing the bell required separate sequential acts of
attention and that this switching of attention was voluntary

 Unattended or unexpected stimuli took much longer to respond to suggesting that

anticipation plays an important role in reaction time
