Problem
Problem
assessing the speed of thought by measuring how long it took the participants of Wundt
to make a judgement
Measuring discrepancies between the actual and perceived position of a pendulum and
inferred that these numbers represented the speed of thought
Methods
Participants of Wundt were asked to indicate the relative position of either a rotating
clock arm or swinging pendulum or in most case the sound of a bell
Afterward; they would do the opposite where they have to indicate at which point in a
song a light came on
Results
He found that the reaction of his participants was significantly longer when the stimulus
was present virtually
The average time for a human to react to an event was about 1/8 of a second
Conclusion
That seeing the pendulum and hearing the bell required separate sequential acts of
attention and that this switching of attention was voluntary
