Critical Thinking Writing Practice
Directions: Choose ONE of the situations below and write a three-paragraph essay.

- Education is not just learning facts in school. It comes from

a word meaning “to lead.” Education may lead us to a new
way of thinking, a new kind of behavior, a way of making
decisions, a better memory. Education may be practical.
We are students from the time we are born whether we are
in kindergarten or college, at home, on the job or with
friends.
Directions: Write about two important lessons you have learned outside of
school. Where did you learn them? How did you learn them? How did
learning them help you?

- Boy, that was some talk my father gave me last night. He

told me he’d take away my guitar unless there was
improvement in my grades in school. He said I could be a
good pupil if I tried. My teacher praised some of my work,
but there is one area that needs improvement.
Directions: Tell about the area in which you need improvement. Is it
something you like to work on? What do you not like about it? How is it
different from the area you are best in?

- In the past, thousands of people perished from sicknesses

such as diphtheria. Bacteria caused diphtheria, and the
germ was easily caught. It caused difficult breathing,
weakness, high fever and death. Today, because of a
vaccination, diphtheria has been wiped out in our country.
Directions: What sickness would you want to wipe out? Why? Did you or
anyone you know ever have this sickness? What was it like?

Unit 10 - Page 2 of 16
- I have been nervous ever since I was accused. How could
they suspect me? I wish the person who did it would
surrender. Don’t get me wrong. This is not a matter for
court, and I won’t end up in prison. I just don’t like to be
wrongly accused.
Directions: Many people have been accused wrongly at least once by a
teacher, a parent or even by a friend. Write about what happened to you.
What were you accused of? How did you feel? Did they find out who really
did it? How?
