The TED talk “The 5 Principles of Highly Effective Teachers” by Pierre Pirard was very
interesting and gave a very deep insight on what makes a teacher effective. Pirard started his
TED talk by comparing managing companies and teaching. He stated that leadership is the most
common thing between the both of them. I agree that leadership is very much so in common with
both of these careers because leaders inspire and motivate others and also always have a plan and
take the plan of action everyday just like teachers do in the classroom. Teachers inspire their
students to learn, create plans for each type of students leaning and then apply those types of
While Pirard was teaching he was struggling with some of his students learning and he
discussed with another teacher who the students in their class were striving. I think by Pirard
going to another teacher for advice is a very effective teacher action because he was seeking
colleges for help when he couldn’t figure out something himself. Getting help from colleges
creates a better environment for the students especially when the colleges get along and help
share information that helps students grow in the classroom. Pierre Pirard learned from a college
“the principle of teaching” which helped the children grow in the classroom. That principle
included 4 basic principles. The first one was that the teacher has to believe in them. Believe that
they can all achieve great success no matter where they come from and to also make sure that the
student knows that their teacher believes in them. The second principle is that the teacher needs
to set a goal for the student. This goal needs to be something they have to strive for but that’s not
far out of their reach, but it also has to mean something to them. The third principle was that the
teacher needs to invest in the students’ lives and goals. The teacher needs to make the goals a
priority to be tackled every single day no matter the setbacks. The last principle is plan
purposefully. Meaning whatever the objective is for the student, the teacher needs to plan
backwards to create an efficient path to success. With all four of these principles, students should
have the desire to succeed and grow in education. Having these four principles means the teacher
has leadership and in control for helping students grow and reach new heights.
An effective teacher is one who can apply the four principles to help their students grow.
It is also someone who never leaves the job at school and goes above and beyond for their
students because they are truly invested in the students and helping them grow. Teachers have to
remember that things don’t always work but it’s the not giving up that has the greater impact.
Education is a very powerful thing in this world, and it is built to have strong leaders running it
