Lately, according to the text we see a reduction in the number

of people using the public transport. And of course, there are

reasonable reasons / explanations for that, as well as effective
measures that can be taken in order to change commuters’
attitude towards public transportation.

The most important reason is that the public transport is not

punctual. You cannot trust it to go to your work on time or to
attend an appointment at a specific time. So as not to run the
risk of losing your job you choose to take your private means to
avoid the delays and be at the desired point/ location.
Furthermore, the second reasonable reason is the convenience
that public transport provides you with. Firstly, you can’t
always find a place to seat, secondly you must tolerate
annoying people sitting next to you or talking on the phone or
shouting to one another, thirdly sometimes you run the risk of
having your personal belongings stolen such as your cell phone
or your wallet and last but not least sometimes public means of
transport are too dirty.
In addition, the last reason is the fact that usually buses or
trains are overcrowded. Too many people, too much noise, too
much traffic and as a consequence you end up being angry and
irritated. It is really not worth starting your day with this way.

Nonetheless, there are measures for the government to take to

encourage citizens to use public transport more. First and
foremost, they must raise environmental awareness. If we use
our private cars, we will have more traffic jam (or congestion)
and as a consequence more air pollution. A good alternative is
to use our private bicycles. This happens (this applies to=ισχύει,
εφαρμόζεται) in some countries where the quality of life is
much better. All the car drivers give the priority to the bicycles
and there is a remarkable balance.
Also, passengers must be provided with more comforts, like
cleanliness, music on means of public transport and the good
quality of them. Lastly/ finally, (at last =επιτέλους) they must
increase the frequency of the bus routes. Τhis way they
decrease the risk for the citizens to miss the bus, avoid
overcrowding and manage to attract more passengers.

In conclusion, it may be true that demand for public transport

has decreased, there are steps that government can take to
revive( = επαναφέρω, αναζωογονώ) its popularity.
