Analysis Essay

In this political cartoon it shows a pregnant woman with strangers around her talking

about how they are going to protect the child's life created by Nick Anderson. In the second half

of the cartoon it shows the now born child with these same people yelling “get a job moocher”

and “Hope you’re mom does not want food stamps to feed you”(Nick Anderson). This cartoon

really shows how people fight for the child's rights before birth and how they care for them after

birth. This cartoon does a pretty decent job at getting the point across because it shows the before

and after of treatment for the child during stages of its life.

The purpose of this piece is to show people that children are not cared for the same way

after they are born than before they are born. The intended audience of this cartoon is more for

people that are not adolescent. This cartoon is trying The author of the artwork is Nick

Anderson, he does art as well as writes articles for those cartoons. This cartoon does a good job

at conveying what it is like for the child and the parent when the child comes into the world. The

government tells people that they will fight for the kids' right to a good life but a majority of the

time that is not the case. As a result, children are put in foster care, have no home, family, and

are thrown out into the real world when they turn into “adults”. Consequently, when the “adults”

are thrown out into the world a majority of them become homeless and pass away anyway. This

cartoon shows how people don’t necessarily think too much about what life might be like for the

child after birth. The government looks down on women who birth so many children and don’t

have the means to support them. However, they want to ban abortions and don’t want to help

make it easier to care for the children. This cartoon shows the sad truth about how the

government cares for the future of all its citizens, born and unborn.

The author’s main claim is that children are not viewed and cared for the same way

before and after they are born. The cartoon shows how people care so much for the child's well

being before birth but after birth they are just seen as another burden on society. The people work

and try so hard to keep the fetus alive but they don’t care what happens to it outside of the womb.

For example, the people in this cartoon are seen with a dialogue bubble saying “ we will do

whatever we can do to protect your life” but are seen on the right yelling “get a job moocher”

and “hope you don't want medical insurance”(Nick Anderson). The main point he is trying to get

across is that kids should be cared for the same way throughout their whole adolescent life but

sadly they are not. If the mother had chosen to get an abortion maybe the kid would not have to

live in such terrible conditions and feel unwanted. While having to terminate a pregnancy is

cruel, it is brutal to force a child into a life where they are unwanted, unloved, and maybe a life

they wanted to have in the first place. Oftentimes we see children take their own life over

something that could have been prevented. As sad as it is to say some children feel they would

have been better off if their mother would have just had an abortion. Many children feel this way

because they are not loved or feel wanted by those who are supposed to be taking care of them.

On top of that, they begin to feel like a burden to their parents and the world so they begin to

develop problems like substance abuse or mental disorders.

This author uses pathos to get across to the audience by illustrating the child in the womb

with “caring” people surrounding it only to show them yelling at the child later with dialogue in

all caps. He uses pathos by over exaggerating the people's mouths and heads when they are

yelling and visibly showing the fetus in the woman's belly. It is heartbreaking to see grown adults

yelling at a poor defenseless child. For a woman to have an abortion it takes an immense amount

of strength to be able to live with that descision for the rest of her life. The author really captures

that in this illustration by showing the real life situation that not only happens before birth but

after. By using pathos to effect the audience view of things really adds to the overall effect of the

illustration. While having an abortion is a terrible thing and nobody should have to experience

something like that, sometimes it is better for both the mother and child if she does have one.

Also, in rare cases there are circumstances where the mother has to get an abortion because the

fetus is killing her. If abortions are banned then two people could loose their lives instead of one.

When this happens the mother either chooses to give up her life for her child or she decides to

give up her child to save her own .

Overall, this cartoon does a good job at conveying its intended message. This illustration

really conveys what it is like for both mother and child. This author does a great job by using

pathos to show the audience the reality for the child. Women should not be forced into a decision

that they don’t like especially when it comes to their own body.
