General film vocabulary
What sort of films do you enjoy? You've got a lot of genres to choose from: westerns (set
in the American Wild West) or action films (fights, car chases etc),
adventure, animated (cartoons), or horror (lots of blood or ghostly visits). Perhaps you
prefer comedy or dramas. Sometimes these are epics (long, historical dramas) and
sometimes these are adaptations (adapted either from a previous film, or from a book or
play). What about thrillers (or suspense), or musicals (with song and dance) and science
fiction (set in a futuristic world)? Or maybe you prefer the old black and white films, or
the classics.

Actors
In a celebrity-obsessed world, actors are as famous as politicians (maybe even more so!)
We like to see our favourite actors playing a character , sometimes these are in lead
roles (=main roles), or supporting roles (not main roles). Every year, the Oscars gives
awards to lead actors and supporting actors, but never to the extras (the actors who
play people in a crowd, often without a speaking part.) We like reading the film credits,
firstly to see who's in the cast (everyone who acted in the film) and if there's a special
appearance by a famous actor who's only in the film for a couple of minutes.

More film vocabulary

Then we like to see who the director or producer is, the screenwriter who wrote
the screenplay(the script that the actors speak) and who composed the soundtrack (the
music background in the film). We'll read film reviews to find out more about the plot (or
storyline) and how good the lighting, cinematography (art of shooting the film)
or costumes are. We might even watch a trailer (short extract from the film) to see
the special effects.
In groups, discuss the following questions.

8. Who is your favorite actor or actress?
9. How do you choose which movie you will watch next?
10. Who is the most beautiful actress in the world? Who is the most handsome actor in
the world?
11. Would you act in a movie if someone asked you?
12. Do you like animated movies? Or are they just for kids?
13. How do you normally watch movies? Do you stream, download, watch on netflex?
14. Do you ever watch movies to improve your English?
15. Are most English movies shown in cinemas in your country with subtitles or
dubbed(voice over in your language)?
16. Before the movie starts in the cinema, do they show trailers (short summary of
movies) that will be released soon?
17. Have you ever brought food or wine with two glasses into a cinema?

20. When was the last time you went to the cinema?
21. How much does a ticket for the cinema cost in your country?
22. Is there a break in the movie so the audience can go and get some food?
23. What would you think if someone invited you to the cinema on a first date?

Film review
The Theory of Everything
Biographical drama, 2014

The Theory of Everything is about the scientist Stephen Hawking. The film is based on a
book,‘Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen’ by his wife, Jane Wilde Hawking. The film is
set in England and starts in the early 1960s. It tells the story of Hawking’s relationship with Jane,
the diagnosis of his motor neuron disease and his success as a physicist.
I love the acting in this film. Eddie Redmayne stars as Hawking and Felicity Jones plays the role
of Jane. My favourite character is Stephen Hawking because he is very clever and brave. I think
this is an ideal film for people who like true stories. It is a bit sad at times but the story is very
interesting and there is a lot of action.
