Definition of Terms

Allergic rhinitis- A diagnosis associated with a group of symptoms affecting the


nose. 

Atopic dermatitis (Eczema)- Acondition that makes your skin red and itchy. It's
common in children but can occur at any age. 

Autoimmune disease- A condition in which your immune system mistakenly


attacks your body.

Asthma- a condition in which your airways narrow and swell and may produce
extra mucus. 

Allergic conjunctivitis- Inflammation of the conjunctiva (the membrane covering


the white part of the eye) due to allergy.

Atopic March- Sometime called Allergic March, refers to the natural history or
typical progression of allergic diseases that often begin early in life. 

Hypersensitivity- a condition in which the normally protective immune system


has a harmful effect on the body. 

Immune system- a complex network of cells and proteins that defends the body
against infection.

Immunodeficiency- Inability to produce an adequate immune response because


of an insufficiency or absence of antibodies, immune cells, or both.

Immunoglobulin E (IgE)- A type of protein in the body called an antibody. 

IgE-mediated- An IgE allergy antibodies are a cause of the allergic reaction to a


food.

Rhinorrhea- an excessive discharge of mucus from the nose.
