Hatchlings and Newborns

All living things produce offspring (reproduce), but life begins in different ways for different
animals. Some animals give birth by hatching or laying eggs, and some animals give birth same to a
human being. Birds and reptiles are the kinds of animals who lays egg, through the process some
mother animals were not present during the hatchling of the eggs. Wherein mammals, like human being
are giving a live birth to their offspring.

BIRDS AND REPTILES

What was similar about the births of the chick and the turtle?

The birth of a chick and a turtle are similar for they were both came from an egg and in the
absence of their mother animals.

All birds lay an egg on a nest and incubate the eggs until it hatched, but some birds leave the eggs until
they are fully mature to hatch. In case of a chicken at a farm or at a backyard, Hens can usually produce
eggs for every 25-27 hours. The incubation period until an egg of a chicken will hatch is about 21 days or
more. Incubating the eggs can be natural by the mother hen, but for some mass production they are
being incubated by incubator machines. If an egg is being incubated by the mother hen, when the time
of the hatchling come, eggs usually crack from the inside of the shell, the chick will use their hardened
beak to slowly crack the shell until they are fully out of the shell. Mother hen are responsible in feeding
the chick until it can explore by itself to find for their food, but for some farm owned chicken, owners
provide the food for the both mother and chicks.

For the turtle’s birth, like birds, turtles were also from eggs laid by the mother turtle. Unlike other sea
creatures, turtles laid their eggs out of the water. They usually lay their eggs buried in sand, mud or
loamy soil that prevents the eggs from drying out during their development. Using her rear flippers, she
excavates the sand to form a nest where she'll lay up to 200 eggs. The eggs hatch in six to 10 weeks,
depending on the temperature. Baby turtles are born on the land, but quickly find their way to the
closest body of water for them to explore and mature.
LAND AND SEA ANIMALS

What was similar about the births of the goat and seal?

Goat and seal are both giving live birth for their offspring, both mothers are present during birth and
both animals are nursing their offspring with milk. For the gestational period of a goat takes about 140-
150 days, while the gestational period of a seal will take 9-11 months. Both animals can give birth
naturally and unassisted, their behavior is most likely irritable. Both animals also have their offspring in a
fluid-sac (the placenta maybe) protecting the baby animals. Goat giving birth usually take about 30 mins,
while the seal give birth faster after the head of the pup comes out. In a video, the presentation of the
goat’s offspring, the front legs first followed by the head and then the rest of the body, the goat the
remove the rest of the sac around the kid’s body using its mouth and tongue. The seal pup head first, in
a video, the mother was pulling the baby using her mouth until the baby seal completely pops out,
mother seal will remove the sac around the pup using its mouth and tongue (same as the way the goat
clean his kid).

For which animals was the mother present at birth?

Animals whose mother is present at birth are the mammal’s animals like the goat and seal, in which
both are giving live birth and nursing their offspring. Most mammals either in land or water bodies are
giving live birth and present during birth, unlike the birds and reptile species, after eggs are being laid,
they will leave their eggs alone (for some birds, they incubate their egg until hatching).

The birth of human babies is similar to that of which group of animals?

Birth of human babies is likely similar to the birth of land mammals and some sea mammals, that during
birth they are present and start to nurse their offspring until they are strong enough to explore on their
own.
In what ways did the newborns resemble their parents?

Most of the newborn animals resemble the appearance of their parents (except for their size), especially
mammal animals. Newborn birds and reptiles appear to be different in color and size until they fully
grown up to resemble the appearance of their mothers. All in all, all animals are similar in appearance of
the same species and kinds, unless they have deformities and abnormalities. Unlike humans, only some
features of their parents resemble a newborn child, and when they grow up they will be develop but
with unique features from their parents.
