Lesson: The United Nations and Contemporary Global Governance
1. What is global governance?
 Global governance is political organization that corresponds and attends to
the problems that involve more than one state or region. They bring together
disperse actors to coordinate collective action at the level of the planet.
2. What is an International Organization?
 It is an organization established by a treaty or other instrument
governed by international law and possessing its own international
legal by personality, such as United Nations, WHO and NATO.
3. What are the powers of International Organizations (IOs)?
 They serve as a medium in delivering and distributing needs to
individual states. They also collect information and monitors trends,
offers delivering services and aid, provides room for forums in
bargaining, and settling international arguments.
4. What are the functions of UN?
 The function of the United Nations aims preserve international peace,
security develop friendly relations among nation, achieve international
peace and security, and be a center for harmonizing the actions of
nations. UN also protects human rights and give they give
humanitarian aid when it’s in need.

5. What are the 5 active organs of UN? And briefly explain the function of
each organ.
 General Assembly- is the main deliberative, policymaking and
representative organ of the UN.
 Security Council- Security Council is a section where officials decide
and identify whenever there is a threat to peace and to what extent that
the organization can
settle and reprimand the existing hostility.
 Economic and Social Council- is the principal body for coordination,
policy review, policy dialogue and recommendations on economic,
social and environmental issues, as well as implementation of
internationally agreed development goals.
 Trusteeship Council- The Trusteeship Council was established in 1945
by the UN Charter, under Chapter XIII, to provide international
supervision for 11 Trust Territories that had been placed under the
administration of seven Member States, and ensure that adequate steps
were taken to prepare the Territories for self-government and
independence. 
 International Court of Justice- is the principal judicial organ of the
United Nations. Its seat is at the Peace Palace in the Hague
(Netherlands). It is the only one of the six principal organs of the
United Nations not located in New York (United States of America). 
 Secretariat- The Secretariat comprises the Secretary-General and tens
of thousands of international UN staff members who carry out the
day-to-day work of the UN as mandated by the General Assembly and
the Organization's other principal organs.

7. What are the challenges faced by United Nations in maintaining global
security?
 The UN challenges that they faced are the treats from terrorism, treats
from violence, massive human rights violations within states and
conflict between states.
