Question 1. [22]
1.1. Draw the logic schematic diagram using a STOP and two Start push buttons for
controlling a solenoid. Use only one relay. [4]
1.2. For the diagram in question 1.1, draw the equivalent electrical circuit. [4]
1.3. What transducer does the following conversion? [10]
a) Weight to voltage
b) Movement to voltage
c) Mechanical force to resistance
d) Light to resistance
e) Magnetic field to voltage
1.4. If the pressure at a sensor is X bar in an open tank with a liquid which has a density of Y
kg/m3 and the sensor is situated at 8 m from the bottom of the tank, how high is the liquid
level in the tank? (Each student must use the allocated data from the DATA FILE
provided on ethuto). [4]

Question 2 [24]
2.1. In the adjacent circuit the power transistor is being used as a static switch to switch a
resistance load of RL = X Ω in a Vs = Y V DC circuit. Its parameters are hFE = 15, VCE(sat) = 2V
and VBE = 0.7V with a base resistor Rb = 5 Ω. (Each student must use the allocated data from
the DATA FILE provided on ethuto).

(a) Determine the minimum value of the driver output voltage labelled Vb in the figure
necessary to drive the switch to obtain the maximum current in the load. [6]
(b) The effective value of the current gain. [2]

(c) Determine also the power dissipation in the switch under this condition. [2]
2.2. a) Determine the value of the components for the static and dynamic equalising networks for
two diodes, when they are connected in a series X V (peak) circuit. Apply a derating of 10%. The
maximum difference in leakage current is given as 5mA and the maximum difference in stored
charge is 3 uC. [6]
b) Find the reverse voltage across each diode under the static conditions and the maximum
voltage across each diode during reverse recovery. [6]

Question 3 [38]
3.1. Draw the circuit diagram of a “Single-phase mid-point” rectifier with a pure resistive load
and clearly explain its operation principle. [8]
3.2. For the rectifier in question 3.1, draw and clearly indicate (on one graph) the voltage across
the resistive load, the voltage across one diode and the current through the same diode. [6]

3.3. If the rectifier is connected to X V, 50 Hz supply to feed Y Ω resistor, calculate: (Each

student must use the allocated data from the DATA FILE on ethuto).
- The average load voltage, the average load current and PDC [6]
- The RMS load voltage, the RMS load current and the total power [6]
- The rectification efficiency [2]
-The form factor [2]
- The ripple factor [2]
-The transformer utilization factor [2]
- The peak inverse voltage [2]
-The input power factor [2]

power pulse shown in the adjacent figure, applied to it. applied to it. (Each student must use the
allocated data from the DATA FILE provided on ethuto).

If the ambient temperature is 230C, calculate the junction temperature at a time of :

- 50ms after the beginning of the first pulse.
- 100ms after the beginning of the first pulse.
