The audit productivity tools are software that helps auditors reduce audit time by
automating the audit function and integrating information gathered. They assist auditors
by planning and tracking audit activities, documentation and presentation, communication,
or data transfer, accessing to data and sharing environments.
4. CAATs are known to assist auditors in defining sample size and selecting a sample for
testing purposes. Describe two techniques used by CAATs to define sample size and
select the sample.
• Microsoft Access – this can be used to analyze data, create reports and query data
files.
• Microsoft Excel – this also analyzes data, generates samples, creates graphs and
performs regression or trend analysis.
5. Explain the four steps to follow when planning for an audit command language (ACL) data
analysis project.
✓ Acquiring the Data – the auditor must gather the data that are necessary for
meeting the goals of the specified projects which is the information can be acquired
by meeting with various organization and/or client personnel.
✓ Accessing the Data – after having the data, the auditor must be familiarized on
them like the file’s structure, format, layout, data fields, number of records and etc.
The auditor should assess the data to know which data analysis task will be
appropriate to us and what platform or environment.
✓ Verifying the Integrity of the Data – then, the auditor should analyze if the data is
valid, accurate and complete to consider that if it is a good data or not. When the
data files are not organized in records, the auditor can use tools to deal with these
types of data files that ACL provides such as count, total and verify.
✓ Analyzing and Testing the Data – the auditors use ACL to evaluate and transform
data into a useful information that can help then in decision-making process. The
data can be of any size, format and from almost any platform.
✓ Reporting findings – after the analyses and tests, IT auditors will present and
communicate the results and findings they gain in an easily readable format. The
auditors must maintain file layouts and ACL projects for backup purposes and to
allow recreation, if necessary.
