A. Effective conversations are also important in various collaborative works. In the context of knowledge
construction, classical conversational norms apply both in face-to-face and technology-mediated mode of
communication. In reference to the second reading material Classic Conversational Norms in Modern
Computer-Mediated Collaboration, come up with a list of conversational norms that can make both face-
to-face and technology or computer-mediated collaborations more effective. Provide reasons and specific
examples for each item. Answer briefly but meaningfully. Also, provide in-text citations and references
when referring to ideas from other authors.

What we believe as norms in face-to-face Reason / Example

collaborative knowledge construction

1.Conversation is more effective and Since both the speaker and the listener can see
informational. each other, a face-to-face conversation is better
for exchanging information than an online forum
because it allows creating a collaborative
environment that allows listeners and speakers to
engage and be more involved. This will also
reduce argument redundancy, as there will be an
impromptu speaking session in which everyone
can contribute using the facts obtained from the
subject or problems.

2. Interrupted Easily The ringing of a phone and the whispering of

other students in the class or conference may
potentially disrupt a face-to-face discussion. The
speaker may get overwhelmed and may forget
what he or she is about to say. So, it is important
to stay focus on your claim or topic and continue
to deliver the message to the audience.

3. Face-to face communication when it comes to During the face-to-face collaboration, the only
problem solving is more cohesive and personal. solution that a student or an employee has is based
on their personal experience since it is not
appropriate to use mobile phones during class or a
meeting to search for an answer on the internet.

4. Information are clear and concise. In the classroom or the workplace, face-to-face
contact reduces the chance of misunderstanding
and encourages good communication. Unlike
other CMCs, such as sending an email, there is a
chance that the message can be or interpreted as
rude or disrespectful by the recipient on occasion.
In face-to-face, it will be easier for the speaker to
express his/her message more lucidly.

5. Can provide non-verbal messages. There two basic types of communication: these
are verbal and non-verbal. In face-to-face
conversation, expressions, also known as body
language, will help us in expressing the message
that our listeners will understand. These include
eye contact, facial expressions, the speed of
speaking, and the pitch of our voice.

What we believe as norms in computer-mediated Reason / Example

collaborative knowledge construction

1. Provide more articles for evidence. Using computer-mediated collaboration is easier

for the students to give examples and cite
evidence that can make their claims stronger. For
example, posting or sending a picture with enough
explanation to expound or elaborate on a specific
issue or topic.

2. Information can be rewrite and edited. People sending or posting an explanation using
computer-mediated collaborative can able to
revise their claims or explanations.

Example: We FEU students, use Canvas as our

learning forum, which has a discussion board
where we can change or rewrite what we've
written and include additional content.

3. Less presence of individuals and socio- Using CMC’s facial expressions, gestures and
emotional interaction. other non-verbal is not visible and this might lead
to miscommunication and misunderstanding of the
receiver of the message. Triana, Kirkman, and
Wagstaff stated that without social interaction and
verbal cues may create anonymity and leads to a
higher incidence of rudeness and behavior in the
CMC in contrast to face-to-face contact (2012).

concise and assure that they are from credible

sources with proper citations.
4. computer-mediated collaborative knowledge Using CMC is incredibly convenient wherein
construction is more convenient. people used computers and networks to
communicate with one another and make
interactions across vast distances and different
time-zones convenient.

Example: During this pandemic, since face-to-

face classes are not allowed, students utilize some
CMCs to pass their tasks and communicate to
their teachers wherever they are.

5. Exchanging of opinions and answers. In a face-to-face conversation where everyone

should be able to participate accordingly and
answer the question whenever the speaker is
asking, for CMC everyone should contribute and
engage in an online discussion.

Example: All of my GEDs subjects provide a

topic for us to defend or explain and everyone
should post their answer in the discussion board
that even my quiet classmate in face-to-face
classes before contributed. CMC discussion
increased our participation in the discussion.
