The ASTM A574 socket head cap screw is an internally
wrenched fastener designed for high tensile strength
applications. Supplies greater tensile strength than equivalent
Description/ size grade 5 or 8 hex cap screws. They are ideal for precision
Applications work with close tolerance and applications needing a well
tooled appearance. Primarily they are used in tool and die
fixturing applications because the head can be counterbored
into a work piece to provide a smooth or flat surface.
Like most fastener specifications, torque is not part of the requirements. There are too
many uncontrollable factors such as surface finish, damaged threads, class of thread fit,
lubrications (oil, plating, tapping fluid, thread locker, etc.) and numerous other factors
that will effect the torque-tension relationship. However, we have included a torque
chart as a reference: (See Torque-Tension Chart)

Body and Grip Gauging Length ASME B18.3
The length of thread on bolts shall be controlled by the grip gauging length (LG max) and body length (LB min). The thread length is calculated LT = L
nom (nominal thread length) – LG max. The minimum body length is the distance measured from the underhead bearing surface to the last scratch of
thread to the top of the extension angle. LB = LG max – transition thread length Y.

Caution: All material included in this chart is advisory only, and its use by anyone is voluntary. In developing this information,
Fastenal has made a determined effort to present its contents accurately. Extreme caution should be used when using a formula for
torque/tension relationships. Torque is only an indirect indication of tension. Under/over tightening of fasteners can result in costly
equipment failure or personal injury.

Clamp load calculated as 75% of the proof load for specified bolts.
All torque values are listed in foot-pounds
Torque values calculated from formula T=KDF, where
K = 0.15 for "lubricated" conditions
K = 0.16 for “as-received” condition
K = 0.20 for plain and dry conditions
D = Nominal Diameter
F = Clamp Load
Note: When using Grade C Top Lock Nuts, the K value can vary between 0.12-0.16.

Back to Specification
No two bolts respond exactly the same to a given torque. There are numerous "real world" complications. Things such as dirt in a tapped hole,
grease of oil on the threads, damaged threads, hole misalignment, accuracy of torque measuring device, and numerous other factors can alter the
torque-tension relationship. Even perfect input torque can give a variation of preload by as much as 25%.
