Original key: F-sharp minor. "In der Fremde" is the title of two distinct songs in the ,;ollection L:,ederkreis [Song
'.;Ycle or c1rcle], composed in May and June 1840 on texts by Eichendorff. (See also Intermezzo and
Waldesgesprach.") The other song comes later in the collection and has a completely different text. The set Was
not published until 1850 when Whistling released it as Op. 39 with Schumann's revisions , including initiating the
collection with this song rather t11an the original opening number. The guitar-like arpeggiated piano figuration is
constant, probably suggested by t11 e instrument's mention in Eichendorffs novel Viel Larmen um Nichts [Much
Noise about Nothing] in which this melancholy verse is sung without specific motivation by a young woman
character. Schumann included Eichenclorff in his assessment of a "new school of German poetry" which inspired
"a more artistic and profound form of song."
