eee DESIGN FOR TORSION 137
& maximum spacing of 300 mm, ‘These bars must have a minimum diameter of larger
es 1/10, According to ACI 1.6.6.3, the torsion
reinforcement must be provided for a distance of at least ; + d beyond theoretically
Fequired, where d is the width of part of eross section containing the closed stirrups
resisting torsion,

Torsion Member
According to ACI 13.2.4, for monolithic slab and beam, construction, torsion member
consists of beam web plus portion of slab on each side extending a distance equal to
lesser of four times the slab thickness and larger of the projection of beam above or
below the slab (Fig. 16.17).

16.9 PROCEDURE FOR TORSION DESIGN
1. The size of the torsion member is decided.
2. Shear force and bending moment diagrams are drawn and the beam is designed for
flexure. The amount of flexural steel is decided and its placing is decided.
3. The beam is designed for shear and the amount of shear reinforcement in the outer
stirrup is calculated in A, / s form. This is because the shear and torsion reinforcement
are later to be added.
4. The factored (7,) torque diagram is drawn and the maximum design torque is evaluated
at the critical section, generally at d-distance from the face of the support.
