AS a benevolent deed with the desire of gaining happiness in his next birth, he constructs buildings for public utility, pond, well, temple, ee. Thus, construction of buildings is the basic necesity forall living beings. Man atains a socal status by making his residence beautiful and equipped with all amenities, and is always attemplive for the socio-economic and ‘educational development, betterment of health and longevity of himself and his family. as) It is the ‘house’ which provides pleasure and comforts to the wife, children, relatives and friends; ‘which protects from the adverse climatic conditions in different seasons; and also it is the base ofall ponds, wells, temples, ete, which fetch rewards of holy and benevolent deeds to the man. Land and buildings are the permanent immovable properties of a man; ‘therefore, the more land or magnificient buildings are owned by a man, the more reputed and respectable © status he has inthe society. - “The creator of this universe Lord Brahma gave the knowledge of construction of buildings (houses), the root ofa happiness, toa strange being, lnown as the Vastu-Purush. In Sanckait, the word Vastu (is derived from theroot Vas (9 which means “to reside”. Methods of selecion -f site and construction of buildings “and huts for residence, cattle shed, sweaponary (armoury), alters for sacrifice Cagya-sthal) tte have been described in Vela, the fundamental scriptures of Indian culture. The live descriptions of royal. palaces, temples and magnifident grand buildings inthe sanskrit epics, Ramayana and Mahabharat et, indicate that the knowledge and art of Vastu was extremely developed inthis country. ‘The tradition of constructing temples, royal palaces, well, public utility buildings, and private Fuses based on the principles of Vastu Shastra, had been prevailing in India since long, But, now a days, ‘eeause ofthe population explosion and influence of the foreign cultures due care isnot taken regarding the five basic mateials—the earth, water, air, fire and pace —while selecting a site and constructing house. ae People are not aware-of the general principles of ‘Vastu Shastra; selection of land and:construction of ‘houses are not in accordance with the basic principles. ‘Therefore the mankind is facing troubles, diseases, sorrows, physical and spiritual degradation and is ‘entangled in mental worries and dis-satsfaction. ‘The root cause behind this dissatisfaction has been traced out by the philosophers. It has been accepted that the impracticable and against the rule ‘constructions of buildings done under the influence of foreign culture, arbitrarily against the principles given in Vastu-Shastra, is the main cause behind this degradation and turmoil. Efforts have begun to ‘improve the situation. Seminars and conferences are ‘being organised on the topicsrelated to Vastuin various [parts of the country. Eminent scholars are writing books in different languages bringing to light the principles ‘and methods of building construction as given in ancient Vastu Shastra, Several books on this subject have been published during the last decade. Most of them have compiled the book keeping monetary gain in mind and ignoring the simple principles processes of construction. Or the important dense and minute topics of Vastu-Shastra giving directive principles for common people have rot been given clearly, making it problematic fr them. to construct houses as per rules. There are either the directive formulae related to magnificent buildings to bbe constructed on big plots of land owned by wealthy ‘persons, or for the organisation of a business concern. ‘Wealthy persons can easily manage to have grand ‘buildings constructed on their land in conformity with «sy the principles of Vastu-Shastra. They can engage and consult the engineers, architects, designers and planners using the power of their money, and enjoy the bliss of construction as per latest techniques and. design. They can get it changed or modified or even, reconstructed iit snot in accordance with the directives cof Vastu Shastra. ‘A-common middle class man can, some how or the other, aford to own a small plot and construct a ‘house on it, desirous of happy, healthy and economically prosperous life of his family. To make such people conversant with the basic principles of ‘Vastu'Shastra regarding selection of site, and ‘onstruction and orientation of various rooms in the house this book “Bharatiya Vastugyan” has been published. It is the result of inspiration received time and ‘again from my friends and well-wishers, that I have ‘been able to bring out the essential features of ancient Indian Vastu Shastra before the common people for their benefit. am specially grateful to Shri Narendra Kumar ‘Arun Proprioter Vidya Bhawan Jaipur, who has bore allthe financial burden and responsibility of publishing, the book, so thatthe knowledge of Vastu Shastra could reach upto the common people through this book. In this book emphasis has been laid on the directives regarding selection of land site, testing the soil, shapes and types of plots, methods of construction, ‘orientation of various rooms depending on the use of five basic physical materials, deciding the place for «6 well, bore-well, trees, temple ete. keeping their auspiciousness in mind. Nort aoe Testing the soil For testing the quality of soil (earth) on the plot where building is tobe constructed, the owner should dig a pitin the centre ofthat plot, measuring one cubit (one ‘hath ie length from the elbow tothe tip of the finger of ‘one’s hand) long, one cubit broad and one cubit deep. ‘Then fil the pit back withthe earth so taken out. Ifsome ‘earth is left out when the pit is fll, the quality of earth (oil) on the plot is good. Ifthe earth completely fills the pit and nothing is lft out, it is so-so (neither good nor bad), but ifthe earth falls short to fill the pit again then ' not of good quality and the plot should be rejected, as itis not suitable for construction of buildings “Another process is to dig a pitas explained above and fill it with water. After filling water, walk a distance ‘of 100 steps and come back to observe the pit. Soil (earth) can also be tested by sowing seeds, If seeds are germinated easily and properly, the earth is ‘good, otherwise it is not suitable for constructing building. It is also said that after filing water in the evening, ifitdoes not dry up by the next morning, the plat is good. If no water is left itis medium, but if the earth is cracked (or cleaved its inauspicious. On excavation, if rocks (stones) are found it is indication of growth of wealth; if bricks are found gain of wealth and prosperity is indicated; If money is found, if is a sign of happiness; if copper or some other superior metal objects are found its indication of gains in many ways; on the other hand ifa skull, pieces of bones, coal, hair ete. are found, it fetches troubles and sorrow. 6 Bhartiya Vastugyan ant-hils, termites snake-oles are foundin the earth, the plots not suitable for residence. It may turn into situation against the principles of ‘Vastu shasta rendering the house inauspicious. In ancient scriptures, methods for determining the directions with the help of the shadow formed when ‘one is placed in sun on the open plot, or by observing the pole-star or other constellations in the night. Now a days, directions can easly be marked by the architects with the help of a compass. Direction and position of a room or gate ete. can be correctly decided ‘nly when the construt'=n work is started after marking the directions properly. It can be noted that several ‘magnificient buildings built without proper co ‘of ditections are being rectified under the expert guidance ‘Of learned architects and scholars of Vastushastra ‘Therefore itis better to start the work after determining the drectionssothat the buldingis constructed according, to the principles of Vastushastra accurately [Ifthe gates, ‘verandahs (baleonies) and also the rooms are constructed In proper place and in proper direction, there remains 20 defect in the building, and inmates are blessed with all the happiness and good fortune Just it is necessary to think over the merits and demerits ofthe plot of land as mentionedin Vastu Shasta, ‘one has to be much more eautions in the construction of the building, A building constructed according tothe basic principles given in vastushastra keeps the inmates happy land prosperous, In modern sense, to make the five basic ‘materials, vz; earth, wate, fre, air and space, favourable to the house is the very essence of Vastu shasta ‘Therefore while constructing a house, rules or principles ‘given in vastu shasta regarding direction, shape, level, height etc. must be followed so as to make full use of, these basic elements. For example, south-east corner is the seat of the god of fire, Agnidev. So kitchen and any room for works related to fire/heat should be made in thiscorner, then only the house wil be suitable as per the Vast principles and there will be no troubles. ‘Constructions against the laws of nature at one's own will Bhartiya Vastugyan “ ‘may cause pollution, which gives rise to many other problems of health, fear ete. that will esult in loss of, ‘weath, property and life als. Directions have very much significance in the construction ofa building. The four directions have their ‘own importance, where a the comers formed by the ‘concurrence of two directions are much more important because effects of both the directions can be felt at the ‘comers. The gods governing these directions are noted below: — Direction Name of the god Effect East Indra Progress & growth South-east Agni Energy, vigour, strength South Yama Death Southwest -Nairut (Demon) Purity & Cleanliess West Varun ‘Water North-West Vayu ‘Aic/Winds North Kuber Wealth & Prosperity, North-east Eeshwar Religion, Divinity Vertically above Brahma _—_Spritual Knowledge Below Anant Resources, worldly pleasures. ‘These gods govern the directions and control the various areas as given above. For successful ‘implementation of any plan, the concemed god ‘is ‘worshipped. Room or space in a particular direction should be used fora purpose suitable tothe nature of the ‘god and the material he controls in that ares. That is how {o avoid defects of Vaszz The god controlling the area in the house is worshipped and offers made to please him, requesting fr his blessings and peaceful hapy ie, o ” Bhartiya Vestugyan Muhurat of Bui ding ‘After the land has been selected the owner should consult learned astrologer to find out an auspicious time (muhurat) to start the construction of the house ‘which would bring him hea!h, wealth, prosperity and {ood fortune. Generally construction of house, temple, palaces (Raj Bhawan), City ete. should not be started or First entry (grab-pravesh) should not be accomplished during the period Ashadh Shukla 11 to Kartik Shukla 1, when gods aze asleep (Dev Shayan). Muburat (auspicious times) for construction of house or starting the work have been given in the Panchangs. Astrologers hhave expressed their own different views about starting the construction work. According to Vasturaj Vallabh, the months of Chaitra and Paush (Mal mas), Jupiter in Teo constellation (singhasth), Vyatipat, Vaidhrit, Dagdhaithi, Guru (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus) when set, ‘weak moon, Rikta thi (49/14) are not auspicious for Starting house construction work or any other good and ‘auspicious work, Some scholars are of the opinion that if Jupiter or Venus are set (Tara) it doesn't matter. Given below are the sun Sankranties during whieh if construction work is started it gives varied results: 1. Sun in the Aries (Mesh) Rashi 14 April to 13 May-very good 2. Bhadrapad and Kartik are also normally permissible. Construction work should be started on the dates (ithis) 2, 3, 5, 6,7, 10, 11, 12, 13, 15 and the Ist of Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight). Prohibitted dates—startng the construction work fon the dates 1, 4, 8, 9, 14 and 30 (Amavas) brings n Bhartiya Vastugyan poverty, loss of wealth, loss of money, death of wife, fear from the rulers. Days—Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday are good days to start construction work. On Sunday or Tuesday starting the work should be avoided, For starting the house construction work, Vrishvatsa caleulation should be done. House construction started in Shukla Paksha brings happiness, while that in Krishna Paksha it brings 1ss. ” Bhartiya Vastugyan “Therefore itis better to start the construction work after Well consideration of the Shukla or Krishna Paksha ‘Auspicious good time should be selected for starting the work of a house. A learned astrologer should ‘be consulted because by doing so the construction work ‘wil go on smoothly, there will be no hinderances or problems, work will be completed soon successfully. Often it has been observed that if the work is started ‘without caring for the auspicious moment, the work has to be stopped in between due to financial dificulties or ‘other problems and is left incomplete, Not only financial tos, it brings loss of mental peace also.
