ABSTRACT

Breast cancer is disease that can be caused by history of not breastfeeding which
triggers increase in the ovulation cycle and endogenous sex hormones in women will trigger
mutations and abnormal cell proliferation that lead to malignancy. This study aimed to
determine the risk factors for history of breastfeeding in the incidence of breast cancer.
Observational analytic study with cross sectional study design. The sampling
technique through purposive sampling obtained a number of case groups of 110 breast cancer
patients and control group of 32 non-breast cancer patients at Sultan Agung Islamic Hospital
Semarang who had met the inclusion criteria and had not meet the exclusion criteria. The test
used frequency distribution and prevalence ratio test with Confidence Interval (CI) value of
95% (α = 0.05).
The analysis results used statistical test of the Prevalence Ratio showed RP value
of 0.788 (95% CI: 0.533 - 1.163), which means that history of breastfeeding is not a risk
factor for breast cancer in women. The results of frequency distribution for total length of
breastfeeding in breast cancer patient respondents were more likely to breastfeed ≥ 6 months
(70.4%) than those who did not breastfeed / <6 months (7%).
The results of this study indicated that history of breastfeeding is not a risk factor for
breast cancer at Sultan Agung Islamic Hospital Semarang.
