There is something indomitable, unquenchable about the human spirit. Through the dark days of two World Wars our national mood was one of resilience/patient fortitude during the many battles, skirmishes, sorties and campaigns that make up a war; and now, in 2020, make no mistake, we are once again living in a war zone with this biological enemy, this endlessly mutating Covid 19 virus. On Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day we will be remembering people of outstanding courage in the face of the enemy, together with those who made the ultimate sacrifice. On All Souls Day we remember those we have loved and see no longer - this side of heaven. This year Remembrance-tide takes on added emotional charge. As a nation, we grieve with the bereaved: so many people lost. As we remember those who have lost their lives in military conflicts past and present, we can add to their number all those medical professionals, key workers and many others whose selfless devotion to duty and to their fellow human beings has put them so at risk. I'd like to give a name to one of the many residents, perhaps dementia sufferers, in care homes who have been prevented from seeing their families, whose emotional support they so need to thrive: my mother Muriel, ninety years old. It is heart-breaking to observe from afar her swift decline. You feel so powerless; and yet, that spark of hope that our faith gives us spurs us on to the next day, the next week. | think it was Samuel Becket who wrote: “Ever tried, ever failed; try again, fail again, fail better...” The words of our dear saint, Mother Julian of Norwich come to me: “All will be well, all will be well”.. eventually; it will just take a long time and we will need all our strength to get through it. We need similar heroic qualities as they did in the war: resolute, patient, resilient, hopeful, in it for the long haul. Hang on in there: Hope springs eternal in the human breast! You can perhaps hear echoes of that great Anfield anthem: “Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart and you'll never walk alone...’ This is our abiding Christian faith, that God will never forsake us, even though our hopes and dreams have never been more tossed and blown My closing prayer is for us all: Gracious God, instil hope in our hearts, inspire love between us; and hold us always in the palm of your hand, Amen With my love and every blessing this Remembrance-tide, Reverend Judith. 4 | Village Link Amanda’s Home Help Domestic - Cleaning - Ironing 01485 609147 07799 821896 ‘amanda@amandashomehelp.co.uk www .amandashomehelp.co.uk ANDREW W WRIGHT LTD Landscape and Gardening Services SEASONED FIREWOOD Tel. 01485 570159 Mobile 07791 539280 COMMISSION, SERVICE, REPAIR CHRIS CASELEY DOMESTIC OIL FIRED BOILER ENGINEER Central Heating Systems Power Flushed WORK GUARANTEED COMPETITIVE PRICES TEL: 01553-828148 MOBILE 079313 55595 Build Right eae New Build + Extensions « Renovation Household, Industrial or Commercial “Undertaking building projects throughout West Norfolk” ‘Ailwork guaranteed and carried outto 8 high standard by qualified Trades People FOR A FREE NO OBLIGATION ‘QUOTATION Tel: 01553 827374) The Cottago, § Shoperdsgato Road, Tilney All Saints, Kings Lynn, Norfolk PES4 4RP Ema aan yo" Family meg Esiablshed Fay Business for over 100 Years Pott Row, PF32 1BY Purveyors of Qualty fresh meats, Pork Sausages, Burgers, Pork Cheese, Home Cooked Pies, Pasties and Cakes (all made to our own family recipes) Organic and Free Range Poultry Telephone Daytime 600222 Evening 600127 COLIN THE CARPENTER All types of doors Supplied & fitted All types of roofs All carpentry work Phone Colin on 01553 630678 or 07931873290 1 Ashwicken Road Pott Row Linda's Miracurls Mobile Unisex Hairdresser Call Linda on 07876121216 PAINTER & DECORATOR insti ETTEREGR alpine ea A DECORATING + PAPERHANSINE 4! At the time of writing this it is now mid-October. Way back in 1987 — for those of you who are young enough for such memories — the great storm of October 15” swept through the south east of England. The counties of Sussex, Surrey, Kent and south Essex were devastated, with millions of trees flattened. Life and travelling suddenly stopped for several days Sadly, by all weather stations, this storm was not predicted. Michael Fish of the BBC, giving one of his last forecasts before retirement, mentioned the possibility of overnight rain and light squalls. He was later on the lecture circuit attaining much publicity and renown, explaining what went wrong with forecasting that day. Since then, all storms which now of course are given names, seem to be rather exaggerated in their strength and intensity, none more so than this autumn's first equinoctial storm (Alex). This was forecast to cause some damage and flooding over much of East Anglia, but being of French origin, to quickly move into the North Sea. Arriving early in the month of October, it failed to do anything damaging, but stayed several days, drizzling all day and night until by 7" October two inches of rain had fallen on land ready to be drilled with winter corn. Not a good start for the 2021 harvest. Having experienced a rather expensive summer buying a new hot water boiler, | decided to inject a little economy into my life up here. Whilst away at boarding school | found that the central heating was not turned on until after half term, which was always during the first week of November, thus allowing boarders to celebrate Guy Fawkes' night at home. My plans to economise were wrecked by Sharon who arranged for Liam and Jasmine to visit here twice during October. To ensure my plan for the heating was not implemented, two hot water bottles were purchased. | could hardly ignore such female wiles without inviting severe retribution. The heating and the Aga have now been on for several days and it is still only the third week in October. Lost again!! Celebrating bonfire night 60 years ago, whilst my family lived in Avenue Road, adjacent to The Walks in King's Lynn, meant joining in the public bonfire on The Walks' playing field. Much fun was had as people fired rockets at one another and bangers were let off behind strangers. Such bad behaviour in those days seemed to be commonplace. As the bonfire burned down and fireworks were used up, it was time to return home. | must now admit to an act of petty misdemeanour. A certain person lived at the top of Avenue Road. He sold electrical goods in a shop in Tower Street. | had fallen out with him during the summer, as | and other friends had too often hit cricket balls into his front garden whilst playing on The Walks. Discovering | had an unused banger in my pocket, | rather naughtily lit it and popped it through his letterbox. Running home, | was quickly in bed and asleep. 12 | Village Link Up early the next morning, | was back to boarding school before any investigation was carried out. During this year various people have found ways to be sponsored to raise money for the NHS — a very needy recipient. One fellow climbed some of the mountains in the Lake District wearing a diver's suit - very hot and hard work! Whilst | was at St James' Boys' Primary School, a coachload of us went up to Cumbria and stayed a week at a Youth Hostel near Keswick, accompanied by two teachers. We climbed Scafell Pike, Great Gable and Helvellyn. At the summit of those peaks we should have seen wonderful vistas, but all we saw was low cloud and rain. Obviously we had chosen the wrong week. With an annual rainfall of 80 to 100 inches, this frequently happened. My plastic raincoat was always wet. My next and final brush with high peaks was as a member of the school combined cadet force (CCF). We were driven up to the Cairngorms in two army lorries. Turning off the A9 at Aviemore, we reached base camp beside Loch Morlich. Several hundred miles in an open backed lorry, with diesel fumes for company, was not pleasant. The return a week later was no better. Whilst at camp, we ate only Army compo rations — generally corned beef hash. Two nights were spent in pup tents above the snowline whilst first we climbed “Cairngorm Mountain" — altitude 1245 metres, then Ben Machdui at 1304 metres. It was then that | found my sleeping bag was not nearly warm enough. | never slept a wink, not only because of the cold but also a covey of ptarmigan took shelter in the lee of my tent and kept up a loud croaking rattle all night. On the last day, without any coaching, we tried skiing. | soon gave up before | broke my leg. Not for me the posh ski slopes of Europe! On reflection, | think the elevation of Lanky Hill — 30/40 metres will be sufficient! With only one more edition of this fine magazine before Christmas, let's hope they don't cancel the festivities. During lockdown there has been a big drop in cats being neutered. There are various reasons for that, the major one being that your vet may not have been able to do routine surgery like neutering during the early stages of lockdown as it was not deemed as an emergency by their governing body, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). But that has changed now, and most vets will do these routine operations now. The result of this is that a lot of people acquired a puppy or a kitten during lockdown (about 7 months ago) at the age of between 10-12 weeks old. That means that these pets are now able to reproduce. For instance, a female cat can become pregnant at 4 months old, and a female puppy start coming into season at 6-8 months of age, depending on the breed. On top of that, an unneutered female cat could have up to 18 kittens in a year! Some people can't cope with all these kittens from their female cat, so a lot of them may end up abandoned or just left outside to become feral. Cats are what we call 'seasonal breeders’. That means that they will breed mostly in the spring and summer. Another interesting fact is that female cats will keep on ‘calling’ until they fall pregnant. And she can already be pregnant again before her current litter are weaned, hence the ability to produce 18 kittens in a year. But beware: because it is now getting closer to winter, does not mean that female cats cannot come into season. Nowadays we have artificial light and heating in our homes, so the cat's brain is telling her that it is summer all year long. So she can still come into season during winter and breed. Male cats can also be fertile from 4 months of age. And tom cats will fight each other for the favour of their ‘queen’. Thus tom cats can end up having abscesses from fighting over a queen So, the moral of the story is: don't let your unneutered male or female cat out until they are neutered. So, book that op with your vet and help the fight against unwanted cats! . You strode Before us down that dreadful road. We were alone, and hope had fled; We loved our country and our dead, And could not shame them; so we stayed The course, and were not much afraid Dear God that nightmare road! And then That sea! One hundred years ago, on 8" November 1920, a coffin containing the unidentified remains of one British soldier left St Pol in France to make the journey to Westminster Abbey where he would be buried in state. At the beginning of the war it had been presumed that the dead would be repatriated but it was soon clear that this would be impossible and in 1915 the Graves Registration Commission officially became part of the army. Back home some received the news that their fallen soldier had “no known grave”. This had a huge impact upon families who were accustomed to having a grave in the local churchyard to visit. Without a grave there could not be closure and in time people realised the terrible truth that their son or husband's body (or remains) had been left to rot on the battlefields Of these thousands of men one would become the Unknown Warrior and many hoped so much that it was their boy being brought safely home. In our villages we had seventeen soldiers with no known grave. Of these only nine could, in theory, have been inside the oak coffin as it made its way slowly down Whitehall; the others were lost in places outside of the chosen zones on the Western Front. Over fifteen thousand bereaved relations applied for the five thousand tickets for the service at Westminster. Priority was given to those who had lost a husband and a son and to those who had lost an only son or all sons. There would have been no chance that any of Grimston's bereaved families could have journeyed to London, the cost and the distance was prohibitive but they would have followed the journey and the event in the newspapers ,hoped and maybe believed The day after the burial a reporter saw a mother standing by the tomb, flowers in hand. He heard her say to her daughter “If | could be sure it were my boy, how proud and happy | should be.” Her daughter replied: “Mother, to us it always will be him.” The Unknown Warrior was the husband, son or father who never came home after the war. And nine bereaved mothers and wives in Grimston could cling to the belief it was their son or husband Village Link | 23 ARMIGER LANDSCAPE SERVICES Sat Garden Maintenance & Clearing Hedge Cutting * Lawn Mowing Fencing + Turling * Patio Laying Ring Andy 07554641405 + 01485 298611 ‘andygosS5@yahoo.com SCRAP METAL WANTED Rubbish Cleared Away Lawns & Hedges Cut Call Chris on VERY REASONABLE RATES Grimston Village Hall CLIFFE-EN-HOWE ROAD POTT ROW Telephone Hillington 600440 iad) ‘Live Together, Learn Together, Play Together’ ‘Small Classes Excellent Results Good Ofsted Stunning Rural Location Wrap around care 8am-5:20pm 07557 530465 Registered Charity 303963 Fliteham Sandringham and West Newton Primary Academy Primary Academy 01485 600383, - _ 01485 540506 ‘iithey ‘The Sandringham Federation of Schools pn Flitcham Fledglings Nursery from age 3 with qualifying government 15 and 30 hour funding Places available — please contact us to look around either setting MOBILE HAIRDRESSING Helen Tel. 01485 600901 or 0777 5514 572 ReB TURF & GROUNDCARE MACHINERY SPECIALISTS Servicing and Repairs to all makes of Lawnmowers ~ Ride-ons Garden Machinery Tel: 01485 540645 www.randbmowermen-d.co.uk WE MEND ~ YOU MOW The Spinning Bare Hand Spinning Workshops Rare Breed Fleece & Fibre Call Theresa 07930605578 Leziate Drove, Pott Row wwwthespinningbarn.co.uk By appointment only 24 | Village Link Pott Row Methodist Church Sometimes it's a good idea to read through a hymn in our devotions. I spend a lot of time reading through the Hymn Book. There are, of course, many copies of Hymn Books, with each denomination having its own. The other day whilst reading the old Methodist Hymnal, | saw these words. They were written by Harriet Beecher Stow, who was the daughter of Lyman Stow. She married Rev Calvin Stow in 1833. In 1852 she became famous when she wrote the book “Uncle Tom's Cabin”. Here are just three verses of that hymn: That mystic word of thine, O sovereign Lord, Is all too pure, too high for me; Weary of striving and with longing faint, | breathe it back again in prayer to thee Abide in me; o'ershadow by thy love Each half-formed purpose and dark thought of sin; Quench, ere it rise, each selfish low desire, And keep my soul as Thine, calm and divine As some rare perfume in a vase of clay Pervade it with a fragrance not its own, So when Thou dwellest in a mortal soul, All heaven's sweetness seems around it thrown. In a series of articles Norfolk Rivers Trust will provide advice to help maintain the health of our globally rare chalk streams and lowland rivers in Norfolk. In times of drought and hot weather it is especially important because of the wildlife our rivers support. Endangered white clawed crayfish, brown trout, eels, and water voles are just a few of the iconic species at risk in Norfolk and you can do your bit to help protect them. Water users: if you use the rivers and streams to dog walk, kayak, fish or even swim in, you could be spreading invasive species which are estimated to cost the British economy £1.7 billion a year. Our native crayfish, the white clawed crayfish are close to extinction due to a crayfish plague carried on invasive crayfish, angling nets and water sports equipment. Apart from this, there are animals and plants which are highly invasive and extremely damaging to our rivers and wildlife. The animals and their eggs latch on to dog fur, wellington boots and nets, and plant roots or seeds can be carried on paddle boards, fishing nets and any other equipment. For this reason, it is absolutely essential that after every trip to the river or lake you follow the Check. Clean. Dry procedure. Check your equipment for any obvious animals. Clean your equipment with hot soapy water. Dry your equipment for at least 48 hours before entering another watercourse. If you are a landowner with riparian land and would like to talk to us about restoration and rewilding please do get in touch with us at Norfolk Rivers Trust. We offer a wide range of services including surveys, restoration and management advice. Email info@norfolkriverstrust.org Village Link | 27 The Dog Walker Alphe studi? As each bird flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for the bird immediately following. By flying in a "V" formation, the whole flock adds at least 71 percent greater flying range than if each bird flew on its own. People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going more quickly and easily, because they are travelling on the thrust of one another. When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go it alone and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird in front. If we have the sense of a goose, we will stay in formation with those people who are heading the same way we are. When the head goose gets tired, it rotates back in the wing and another goose flies point. It is sensible to take turns doing demanding jobs, whether with people or with geese flying south. Geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed. What message do we give when we honk from behind? Finally - and this is important - when a goose gets sick or injured and falls out of the formation, two other geese fall out with that goose and follow it down to lend help and protection. They stay with the fallen goose until it is able to fly or until it dies; and only then do they launch out on their own or with another formation to catch up with their own group. If we have the sense of a goose, we will stand by each other like that.
