1.

Compare and contrast situational influences and dispositional influences and give an
example of each.  Explain how situational influences and dispositional influences might
explain inappropriate behavior.

Situational influences are how you may perceive situations and your surroundings,
these could be how you interact with your friends and how your own behavior is in and
around people and your inner reactions to situations base on outside influences; where
dispositional influences are how you were raised and what your beliefs are such as your
faith, culture beliefs, etc. which again prompts and promotes people to behave a certain
way. With both it can cause inappropriate behavior based on the situation or
circumstance. For example, people from other cultures tend to act and behave a
certain way mainly geared toward culture. If in their culture it is customary to bow to
others as a show of respect, chances are that they will meet people in a totally different
culture that they will bow then as well. Based on the person perceiving the situation or
event and based on that the other persons situational and dispositional influences
would determine how inappropriate behavior could be perceived.

2. Name and describe at least three social roles you have adopted for yourself. Why did
you adopt these roles? What are some roles that are expected of you, but that you try to
resist?

I feel that the 3 roles that I feel that I follow most are the following. Friend, Daughter
and Partner. In my life currently these are the things that are closest to me and feel that
I am predisposed to. I am a friend as I have a several friends that I have grown up with
and keep in touch and go out with for my social release. I am a daughter in which I
keep very close tabs on my parents and not only visit them often but make sure that I
see and talk to them regularly as they are an important aspect of my life. I am also a
partner to my current boyfriend since we live together and are close. Mother, wife, I
would think is the most influence and forth on my current horizon. This is primarily
being driven by my parents who would like for me to have my own family one day.
Consequently, this is part of the dispositional influences that I face in my life due to
cultural beliefs and upbringing.

3. Consider recent news stories on race and sex.  Some people are more willing to
openly display prejudice regarding sexual orientation than prejudice regarding race and
gender, or maybe the other way around; some people are more willing to openly display
prejudice regarding race than prejudice towards sexual orientation.  Speculate why this
might be.  Use what you learned in this lesson to support your response.

Typically, people’s behavior is based on some form out outside influence (situational influence).
Racism, sexism, and the other isms are based on poor education, knowledge and an
understanding of one’s self especially in how we perceive ourselves. Recently in the news we
have seen both racism and sexism in open display. Whether it is the #MeToo movement by
woman finally standing up for being sexually traumatized throughout the years to alt right
groups just outright killing people that they do not agree with based not only on their race but
in some respects gender as well due to the hi prevalence of misogyny they commit and practice.
We as humans are ignorant sentient beings who have the ability to love and create and yet we
like to kill, destroy or belittle to make themselves feel better due to their own circumstances. To
me that make us an incredibility weak species, one that cannot ultimately survive the long haul.
Our current technological advances instead of being used to pass and share knowledge is
currently being used to pass hate, mistrust and deception. This all has to do with both
situational and dispositional attributes of an individual or groups.
