A: In the contemporary world, with the mushroom growth of technology,

a sedentary lifestyle is inevitable. Many people, especially white-collar

workers are adopting this lifestyle. This is extremely dangerous for their
health and can drain their energy for other activities such as taking care
of their babies or hanging out with their friends. What do you think the
reasons for this problem are?
B: Initially, office workers frequently have to work 8 hours per day. They
have to cope with a lot of pressure from meeting deadlines,
accomplishing their tasks as well as obtaining the set targets. It is
understandable that they hardly find time and energy for other things.
A: It’s a good idea. The pressure at work drains their energy. When they
get home, they are dead tired of exercising, leading to a lack of energy
as well as other health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, and
cancers, etc... Especially for those who work a lot with computers, eye
problems and musculoskeletal diseases are commonly found among
these individuals which results in long and grave consequences
afterward. A report from the British Royal Academy of Medicine in 2015
reveals that regular exercise can decrease the risk of stroke, certain
types of cancer, depression, cardiovascular diseases and dementia by
up to 30%, bowel cancer by 45%, hypertension and type 2 diabetes to
50%.
B: I have already read some research on the Internet showing that an
inactive lifestyle would destroy physical health, increase blood sugar
levels and body fat as well as other mental issues. This not only brings
about the aforementioned diseases but also worsens body flexibility,
lowers metabolism, and diminishes our energy sources. Moreover,
unpredictable consequences like stroke or death are likely to happen.
A: Another cause that can be mentioned here is that a prolonged period
of sitting leads to the loss of muscle strength and endurance as well as
weaker bones and mineral scarcity. All of these lead to a lack of energy
and low productivity. The human body is created for moving and
performing activities. According to scientific research, the strength and
density of ancient human bones are much higher than those of modern
bones
B: Another demerit of office jobs is having to save time by eating out or
buying fast food to catch up with office hours, deadlines, or even
overtime, increasing the consumption of unhealthy food such as fast
food, soft drinks, etc. Nevertheless, street food can be unhygienic and
render various health problems such as digestive disorders, steatosis,
obesity, etc.
A: I agree with you. Moreover, according to recent research by American
Psychology Association, sitting for a long time also causes lower social
interactions. As a result, mental health is affected as well.
B: That's right. I also think that mental health should be cared for like
physical health. The features of the office work require a strong spirit to
face the difficulties of the job. Without proper attention, a person’s
mental health can be gravely affected. Consequently, it can lead to
depression or anxiety.
A: These psychological factors can worsen other illnesses… Any other
ideas?
B: In the modern era, both work and recreational activities depend on
technology, particularly official work. After work, the exhaustion makes
them immerse in virtual entertaining activities, which worsen things with
prolonged sitting. As a result, they suffer from back pain and fatigue.
A: There are many more but the reasons mentioned above are primary.
B: I agree. We should balance our lifestyle in order to have a healthy
body and stay away from health concerns.
