The article “In defense of the world” written by Eduardo Galeano has had a huge

impact due to the powerful message it contains. This piece illustrates some reasons why

writers write. Some of them are the need to communicate, transmit knowledge or to face

reality. Indeed, he does a socio-critical analysis of the system by showing how it is to live

in Latin America. There are strong arguments against the social, economic and cultural

condition of this place. Such as the distinctive social class. Besides, the author expounds

the powerful tool that is writing to speak up for a cause and make people’s voices be

heard. Also, he encourages people/writers to take action and denounce the oppression that
not only the richest countries have to the poorest countries, but also, the system itself.

Finally, he reveals the necessity of a real social change and a collective awareness of

reality.
