Haverhill MA Restaurants- Downtown

Restaurant District

Downtown Haverhill Massachusetts has undergone a major transformation over the past 30
years. Once quite rundown with many of the buildings boarded up, downtown Haverhill has
become an exciting destination for the locals to visit.

Mayor Fiorentini has overseen the revitalization of the downtown area since the early 2000’s. It
is now becoming known for its unique boutique shops, an artist epicenter and now the home of
over 20 restaurants. Not only have shops and restaurants moved into the downtown, but there
have also been some exciting residential developments like the Heights a luxury apartment
community overlooking the Merrimack River.

The options for Haverhill MA Restaurants in the downtown are expanding on a regular basis.
Menu options provide some excellent food choices, including tacos, burritos, traditional Italian,
gyros, pizza, flatbreads, deli sandwiches, breakfast, specialty coffee and more…..

A majority of the Haverhill restaurants are found on Washington St. and extend down the side
streets and behind Washington Street.

Living and buying a home in Haverhill presents a unique opportunity.

It is one of the few small cities around with a destination downtown. There is a lot of great
reasons to visit downtown Haverhill. Lately, the reasons have gotten greater. The downtown has
spurred quite a food scene that draws not only the locals but diners from neighboring
communities as well. Within a very short distance, you can walk to over 20 restaurants in the

District has also been coined Restaurant Row and you can find a some of Haverhill’s best
restaurants in the restaurant district.
Some of My Favorite Restaurants In Haverhill MA
I am not going to list every restaurant available, just highlight a few of my favorites downtown
eateries.

Battle Grounds Coffee Co– One of my downtown favorites (I meet a lot of clients here). Some
great coffee is roasted fresh on-premises with a wide variety of coffee drinks, pastries, breakfast
sandwiches and lunch sandwiches. A great casual atmosphere highlighting some characteristics
of an old mill building found in Haverhill. Great to grab a quick drink or bite to eat. The menu is
limited but the food is good.

Barrios– Who doesn’t love tacos!! The Barrio tacos are served up with a modern twist. Make
your own tacos with a variety of ingredients and pay by the taco!! The protein choices and
toppings are extensive. Barrios serves up the best tacos in a hip and trendy environment. It also
has one of the best outdoor seating areas with a great scenic view of the Merrimack River.

The Tap Brewing Company– The Tap Brewing Company is an American pub offering
traditional pub fare while pouring a serving up their own award-winning draft beer brewed on-
site. The food doesn’t light the world on fire but I love their outdoor seating area overlooking the
Merrimack River. And of course, grab a draft of Haverhill’s own beer.

The Hidden Pig– A great place to go for two things. Burgers and Tater Tots! Forget the french
fries and order the tots. The menu is a bit more extensive than burgers but if you are looking for
a great burger this is a great place to go. It has limited seating and a few seats on a back deck
overlooking the river.

Krueger Flatbread– Not your average pizza joint. Krueger Flatbreads serves up some different
topping combinations with quality ingredients. I love the Bradford Square a combination of
marinated sirloin tips, caramelized onions, blue cheese, balsamic vinegar and asiago cheese. And
don’t forget its sister restaurant next door, Olivias. Providing popular dishes from Italy.

Essex Street Grille– Looking for something a little more upscale check out the diverse menu at
the Essex Street Grille. And, don’t forget to start your meal with one of their specialty martinis.

Sparky’s Wings and Things– If wings are your thing, don’t forget to pick up an order of wings
on your way by. It’s a hole in the wall but there are 33 different flavors of wings available plus
specials. I crave the Bayou Dry Rub wings, mildly spicy and no sauce just a dry spice rub. Grab
some cheap eats at Sparky’s for a relaxing Friday night

A1 Diner– If you just want some good, old diner food don’t forget the A1 diner. A long-time
favorite staple of the downtown Haverhill food scene with a classic 40 style diner setting. If you
want the best waffles try their orange poppyseed waffles.

Peddlar’s Daughter– Looking for some traditional Irish fare? This pub favorite can serve you
up some Scotch Eggs, Fish and Chips or Cottage Pie. Reminiscent of an Irish pub you can also
catch some live Irish music towards the end of the week. There is also a fantastic beer selection
of some Irish favorites. Talk about tapping into Haverhill’s manufacturing routes where many of
the Irish settled coming to the United States to work in the many local factories.

Wang’s Table– Wang’s Table serves up some solid, classic Chinese and Japanese fare. The
sushi and maki roll menu is extensive. If you are looking for a great Asian meal in the Haverhill
Restaurant District, check out Wang’s. I find it to be one of the best Chinese restaurants in the
city.

Casa Blanca– Find some casual family dining at Casa Blanca serving up traditional Mexican
food. Don’t forget Taco Tuesday where you can get two tacos for a $1.75 alongside a great
Margarita.

Wicked Big Cafe– The Wicked Big Cafe is another of the many cafe offerings to be found
downtown. Stop by for a specialty coffee drink, pastries, breakfast sandwiches or lunch
sandwiches. Walk out with one of their fruit smoothies as well for a non-coffee treat!

Barking Dog Ale House– The Barking Dog Ale House is a local favorite serving up signature
dishes as well as pub favorites. Don’t forget to check out their Buffalo Mac and Cheese along
with a signature Martini or Infused specialty cocktails.

Butch’s Uptown– Serves up lots of classics with good portions in a pleasant atmosphere. Lots
of pasta and fried seafood choices at Butch’s Uptown.

Haverhill MA Restaurants

Not only is downtown’s restaurant row a great spot to eat there are other great eateries across the
city. The northside of Haverhill on the New Hampshire border along 125 is now considered the
second “restaurant row in Haverhill” and you can find some great food there as well. Haverhill’s
second “restaurant row” is filled with mostly chain restaurants you have Kobe Japenese Steak
House, Chipotle, Panera, Five Guys, Unos, Longhorn Steakhouse, Applebees and much more to
select from.

And don’t forget the many other restaurants in downtown Haverhill Restaurant District as well as
