Polyfelt TECHNICAL NOTE
Evaluation of the adhesion strength of asphalt concrete pavements
installed with and without Polyfelt PGM paving fabrics.
Poiyfelt PGM paving fabrics are proven to significantly delay the propagation of cracks in old pavements from reflecting upwards into
new asphalt overlays. To determine the adhesion strength of pavement overlays incorporating Polyfelt PGM paving fabrics and
pavements with no paving fabrics adhesion tests. were conducted on extracted pavement cores at the National University of Singapore.
Overview
Solving problems associated with reflective
cracking of new asphalt overlays over old
cracked pavements subjected to heavy traffic
stress (airport runways, container loading
Yards, slow traffic lanes of highways) is @
major problem for Pavement engineer.
Installation of bitumen saturated paving fabric
stress relieving interlayers between old and
new overlays is proven to significantly extend
the lifespan of overlays.
(One of the main benefits of instaling paving
fabric is the achievement of more consistent
adhesive bonding of the new overly t the old
pavement than is achieved in overlays without
paving fabrics. In igh stress pavements such
as airport runways tis is important. Effective
adhesive bonding improves the transfer of
ttaffc load stress down through the pavement
structure,
To compare the athesive bond strength of
pavements. incorporating Polyfelt_ paving
fabrics and pavements with no paving fabric
cores were extracted from numerous projects
and adhesion tests conducted on the cores at
the Nationa Univesity of Singapore.

Conclusion
The tests show that paving fabrics induce @
higher and more uniform bond strength than is
evident on pavements with no paving fabric.
This uniform bonding of layers improves the
cffectve transfor of ‘traffic stress dawn
through the whole pavement directly
