Assignment 1 – Fatigue of Materials (Unit 7)

Due in Week 3 on 11 March 2020

Separate the class into 5 groups and on the due date give a well prepared and detailed
presentation on the following concepts as they relate to Fatigue Failure in Materials. Work
in the groups as assigned to the group number with which you would have split yourselves
into.
Group 1: Cyclic stress and types of cyclic stress.
Group 2: High cycle fatigue and low cycle fatigue and their characteristics.
Group 3: The mechanism of fatigue failure.
Group 4: S-N Diagrams, Fatigue strength and Fatigue limit.
Group 5: Endurance limit modifying factors in designing for fatigue.

Assignment 2: Experimental Methods of Stress Analysis (Unit 8)

Due in Week 6 on 1 April 2020
In the groups that were created in Assignment 1, prepare and give a concise presentation on
the following methods stress analysis as they are used in engineering design:
Group 5: Brittle lacquers method
Group 4: Moire method
Group 3: Strain gauges
Group 2: Photoelasticity method
Group 1: Computational stress analysis with Software Packages
