Tables Used for Exam II

TABLE 1

An airline wants to select a computer software package for its reservation system. Four software
packages (1, 2, 3, and 4) are commercially available. The airline will choose the package that bumps as
few passengers as possible during a month. An experiment is set up in which each package is used to
make reservations for 5 randomly selected weeks. (A total of 20 weeks was included in the experiment.)
The number of passengers bumped each week is obtained, which gives rise to the following Excel output:

ANOVA
Source of Variation SS df MS F P-value F crit
Between Groups 212.4 3 8.304985 0.001474 3.238867
Within Groups 136.4 8.525

A plastic injection molding process is often used in manufacturing because of its ability to mold complicated
shapes. An experiment was conducted on the manufacture of a television remote part, and the warpage (mm) of the
part was measured and stored in TVRemote. (Data extracted from M. A. Barghash and F. A. Alkaabneh, “Shrinkage
and Warpage Detailed Analysis and Optimization for the Injection Molding Process Using Multistage Experimental
Design,” Quality Engineering, 26, 2014, pp. 319–334.) Two factors were to be considered, the filling time (1, 2, or 3
sec) and the mold temperature (60, 72.5, or 85° C).

TABLE 3

The dean of a college is interested in the proportion of graduates from his college who have a job offer on
graduation day. He is particularly interested in seeing if there is a difference in this proportion for
accounting and economics majors. In a random sample of 100 of each type of major at graduation, he
found that 65 accounting majors and 52 economics majors had job offers. If the accounting majors are
designated as "Group 1" and the economics majors are designated as "Group 2," perform the appropriate
hypothesis test using a level of significance of 0.01.
TABLE 4

A computer used by a 24-hour banking service is supposed to randomly assign each transaction to one of
5 memory locations. A check at the end of a day's transactions gave the counts shown in the table to each
of the 5 memory locations, along with the number of reported errors.

Memory Location: 1 2 3 4 5 Total

Number of Transactions: 82 100 74 92 102 450
Number of Reported Errors 11 12 6 9 12 50
Total 93 112 80 101 114 500

The bank manager wanted to test whether the proportion of errors in transactions assigned to each of the
5 memory locations differ.

Table 5

The following information is available for two samples selected from independent and similarly shaped
rightskewed populations:
Sample 1: n1 = 5, 1.1 2.3 2.9 3.6 14.7
Sample 2: n2 = 6, 2.8 4.4 4.4 5.2 6.0 18.5

Assuming this is a two-tail test.

Table 6

It is believed that, the average numbers of hours spent studying per day (HOURS) during undergraduate
education should have a positive linear relationship with the starting salary (SALARY, measured in
thousands of dollars per month) after graduation. Given below is the Excel output for predicting starting
salary (Y) using number of hours spent studying per day (X) for a sample of 51 students. NOTE: Only
partial output is shown.

Note: 2.051E - 05 = 2.051 ∗ 10-05 and 5.944E - 18 = 5.944 ∗ 10-18.

TABLE 7

A real estate builder wishes to determine how house size (House) is influenced by family income
(Income) and family size (Size). House size is measured in hundreds of square feet and income is
measured in thousands of dollars. The builder randomly selected 50 families and ran the multiple
regression. Partial Microsoft Excel output is provided below:

TABLE 8

Profitability remains a challenge for banks and thrifts with less than $2 billion of assets. The
business problem facing a bank analyst relates to the factors that affect return on assets (ROA),
an indicator of how profitable a company is relative to its total assets. Data collected on a
sample of 199 community banks and stored in CommunityBanks include the ROA
(%), the efficiency ratio (%) as a measure of bank productivity, and total risk-based capital (%)
as a measure of capital adequacy. (Data extracted from “What the Top 200 Publicly Traded
Community Banks Do Better Than Peers,” bit.ly/1TLXbO0.)
