OBJECTIVE: Illustrates pairs of angles

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY:

• Illustrating Pairs of Angles

In this lesson, you will learn the different ways on how pairs of angles maybe
classified.

TRY TO DISCOVER!

There are different ways in which pairs of angles maybe classified. A pair of
angles maybe related on the basis of the sum of their angle measures or their
position.

Based on the sum of angle measures, angle pairs can be classified as either
complementary or supplementary.

➢ Complementary angles are two angle whose sum of their measures is 90°.

➢ Supplementary angles are two angles whose sum of their measures is 180°.

Now, we shall see how pairs of angles maybe related by their positions.

➢ Adjacent angles are two angles that

have a common vertex and a common
side but have no interior points in common.

➢ A linear pair are two angles that are both

adjacent and supplementary.

➢ Vertical angles are two nonadjacent angles

formed by two intersecting lines.

ARE YOU READY TO PRACTICE

A. In the given figure, ∠𝐴𝑂𝐵 and

∠𝐶𝑂𝐷 are right angles.

Name two pairs of:

1. complementary angles
2. supplementary angles
3. vertical angles

Answers:
1. Complementary angles: ∠3 and ∠4, ∠5 and ∠6
2. Supplementary angles: ∠1 and ∠2, ∠7 and ∠8
3. Vertical angles: ∠3 and ∠6, ∠4 and ∠5

B. Find the values of x and y in the given figure.

Solution:
x + 90 + 50 = 180
x = 180 – 90 – 50
x = 40°
y + 50 = 180
y = 180 – 50
y = 130°

C. From the given figure, form an equation in x and solve for the unknown measure.

Solution:
2x + 90 + x = 180
3x = 180 – 90
3x = 90
3𝑥 90
3
= 3
x = 30°
2x = 60°

D. The measure of one of two complementary angles is 15 less than twice the measure of
the other. Find the measure of each angle.

Solution:
Let x be the measure of the first angle and 2x – 15 be the measure of the second angle.
Since the two angles are complementary, we have the following equation,

x + (2x – 15) = 90
3x = 90 + 15
3x = 105
x = 35°
Therefore, the measure of the first angle is 35° while the measure of the other angle is
2(35°) - 15° = 55°.

PRACTICE EXERCISE 1:

State whether each of the following is true or false.

1. Two adjacent right angles are complementary.

2. Angles in a complementary pair are both acute angles.
3. If one of the two angles in a linear pair measures 90°, then the other angle has a
measure greater than 90°.
4. The sum of the measures of any obtuse angle and any acute angle is 180°.
5. All right angles are congruent.
6. Two vertical angles are always congruent.
7. If two angles form a linear pair, then they are supplementary.
8. Complementary angles are angles whose measures are both less than 90°.
9. If two adjacent angles are congruent and complementary, then the measure of each
angle is 90°.
10. An angle formed by two perpendicular lines is acute.

PRACTICE EXERCISE 2:

SUMMING UP
Remember:

• Complementary angles are two angles whose measures have a

sum of 90°.
• Supplementary angles are two angles whose measures have a
sum of 180°.
• Adjacent angles are angles which have a common side and a
common vertex no interior points in common.
• Linear pair are two angles that are both adjacent and
supplementary.
• Vertical angles are two nonadjacent angles formed by two
intersecting lines.

PRACTICE EXERCISE 3:

Answer the following.

1. The measure of one angle in a complementary pair is 3 times the measures of the other.
