OBJECTIVE: Illustrates the properties of inequalities on numbers, segments and angles

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY:

• Illustrating the Properties of Inequalities on Numbers, Segments and Angles

This lesson will enable you to understand and apply the different properties of
inequalities concerning numbers, segments and angles.

TRY TO DISCOVER!

Do people look the same? How about objects?

➢ In our daily conversations, we have expressions such as the following:

- Kyra weighs lighter than Ayel Anne.

- Teejay is taller than Jayvee.
- She is richer than Nica.
- My score is higher than yours.

What idea can you get from these sentences?

These show that people differ from each other and that differences or inequalities are
all around us.

➢ The above examples involve the concept of inequality. In mathematics, we use

symbols of inequalities like >. <, ≥ 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ≤.

- What is an inequality?

➢ Let’s consider geometric inequalities.

Compare the length of the segments below.

Since AB = 3, CD = 5 and 3 < 5, then AB < CD.

How do we compare line segments?

➢ Compare the angles below.

Since m∠𝐴 = 130 and m∠𝐶 = 55 and 130 > 55, then ∠𝐴 > ∠𝐶.
How do you compare two angles?

➢ There are laws which govern inequalities between numbers which are called
properties of inequalities.

Properties of Inequalities

➢ Applying these to segments, we have

̅̅̅̅ and ̅̅̅̅
𝑨𝑩 𝑪𝑫, AB > CD if and only if there exists ̅̅̅̅
𝑬𝑭 such that AB = CD + EF.

➢ For angles ∠𝐴 and ∠𝐵, 𝑚∠𝐴 > 𝑚∠𝐵 if and only if there exists ∠𝐶 such that
𝑚∠𝐴 = 𝑚∠𝐵 + 𝑚∠𝐶.

PRACTICE EXERCISE 1:

State the property of inequality illustrated by each of the following statements.

1. If m > 9 and n < 9, then n < m. _______________

2. If AB = 10 is true, then AB ≠ 10 is false. _______________

3. If x > 4 and y > 6, then x + y > 10. _______________

4. If x = 30 and y = 45, then x < y. _______________

5. If 2x > y and y > m, then 2x > m. _______________

PRACTICE EXERCISE 2:

Name the property 0f inequalities that justifies each statement.

1. If (m + n) < 18 and (x + y) < 20, then (m + n) + (x + y) < 38.

2. If p = q and 5 < 6, then 5p < 6q. _______________

3. If 𝑚∠𝐴 > 𝑚∠𝐵, then ∠𝐴 > ∠𝐵. _______________

̅̅̅̅ < 𝐶𝐵
4. If AD < CB, then 𝐴𝐷 ̅̅̅̅. _______________

5. If BC > EF and EF > DE, then If BC > DE. _______________

SUMMING UP

• An inequality is a mathematical sentence stating that two quantities

are not equal.

• The properties of inequality are trichotomy, transitive, addition and

multiplication. We must be guided by these properties in dealing
with segments and angles.

PRACTICE EXERCISE 3:

Apply the properties of inequalities to complete the following statements.

1. If a > 7 and b < 7, then ________.

2. If x > 6 and y > 5, then x + y > ________.

3. If m∠1 > m∠2 , then ________.

4. If AB > PQ and PQ > RS, then AB > _________.

5. If xy ≠ 15 is false, then xy = ________ is true.
