Review of Task 3 of Ms.

Safoora by Nadia Abdul Ghani

Chapter four, 'Thematic development' by John Flowerdew's (2013) book Discourse in English
Language Education, was presented by Ms. Safoora. The chapter deals with the development of
theme in the construction of cohesion by providing basic introduction of theme (the departure
point of the message) its different conditions and types. Theme was also related to the concept of
rheme (excluding the theme pary and rest of the whole part of the sentence). Theme was further
elaborated with the help of clauses and their categories like as declarative, imperative,
interrogative, anticipatory and exclamatory with special reference of SFL Contextual model to
describe the development of theme in any discourse by differentiating the informations in terms
of given and new. Theme is responsible for the continuity and flow of the texts and it can be
developed at micro level in texts like as hypertheme (different passages contained different
themes) and cab be macro theme that includes several threads of hyperthemes contribute to
develop the overall unified theme of the text known as macrotheme. The presenter presented the
comprehensive picture of the concept of theme in a systematic way with tagging relevant
instances that clear the patterns, importance and pedagogical needs in discourses as well as in
real life linguistic activities. The slides' content was packed with relevant and adequate in a
simple but sequential manner.
