It was the concept of a versatile Kampfzer- st6rer aiplane that would be able to combine the capabilities of ‘a bomber, ground-attack aicraft and a reconnaissance aircraft. The very high expectations concerning performance and versatility of the planned machine forced the engineers of Junkers company to double their efforts on the designing stage of the project. However the hard work paid off giving in effect one of the best and most versatile airplanes of the Second World War, which Ju 88 undoubtedly was. The A version was a medium bomber or torpedo bomber also prepared to conduct diving attacks. It was powered by two Jumo 211 inline engines in BG and J versions. The first machines of mass production were deployed to the units in March 1939, Yet it was during the Battle of England, in the summer of 1940, that the plane was used on a large scale. The fist confron- tations with the British fighters showed that the plane's defensive armament and armour were too weak. The following versions of the airplane were modernized. Still it was not until the most widely produced A-4 version, test flown in November, that the majority of the construction's weak points was eliminated. Also the power was increased by installing the new Jumo 211 J-1 engines, which significantly boosted the airplanes performance. The further devel- ‘opment of the construction gave rise to the tropicalized versions of the plane, designated A.9, A-10, A-11, and torpedo version, des: ignated A-17. Ju 88 took part in all ofthe Luftwaffe’ air campaigns gaining the reputation of a reliable and durable airplane that was liked and esteemed by the pilots. Ju 88 airplanes, still roughly based Con the first version, were used in the frontline units until the very tend of the war. In time they also acquired the role of ground-attack airplanes, night fighters, reconnaissance airplanes, naval patrol ait- planes, unmanned flying bombs in Mistel configuration as well as Jong range, high altitude airplanes.
