Excerpts:
Early in the article, Carlisle explained in simple terms, “When the smaller crimes go down--the quality of life crimes--
then the murder rate goes down.”
Carlisle reported that in Hawaii we don’t have “the death penalty, but we have one of the lowest murder rates in the
country.” He continued, “The F.B.I. statistics for 1998 showed Hawaii’s homicide rate was the fifth lowest.”
Changing voters’ minds will not be easy: “Culture and religion play a role, as well as political vagaries in each state.”
This website provides arguments against capital punishment. The author suggests the death penalty is not a
deterrent of crime. Surprisingly, the homicide rates of several different states that do not have the death penalty are
actually lower than those with the death penalty. Hawaii is one of these states. There are quotes from judges,
governors, and the prosecuting attorney from Hawaii, Peter Carlisle. Carlisle makes a reference to the Bryan Uyesugi
case – where the defendant shot seven of his co-workers at the Xerox copy machine company.
There is specific evidence against the death penalty that indicates it is not a deterrent of crime. For example,
even without the death penalty, Hawaii has the fifth lowest homicide rate in the nation. This proves, at least to some
degree, that a state without the death penalty can thrive as a one of the safest states in the nation. Along these same
lines of reasoning, homicide rates in the states that do have the death penalty are still high, such as Texas and
California. This indicates that the death penalty doesn’t necessarily deter crime. To ground this in more specific data,
the NY Times found that during the last twenty years, the homicide rate in states with the death penalty has been 48%
to 101% higher than states without the death penalty!
Culture, religion, politics, and the overall ideologies that dominate a community influence whether the death
penalty will remain law. In more conservative states, the death penalty is more prevalent. Interestingly, at Michigan’s
constitutional convention in the 1960s, some argued that those who were executed were predominantly poor and of
racial minorities. If valid, this is concerning as it indicates corruption in the system (a system that can end life). If the
death penalty remains, more efforts must be taken to ensure the quality and fairness of the justice system through
which they will be punished.

Excerpts:
Towards the middle of the article Dual says, “Calcium should also be supplemented because lack thereof causes
aggression, lethargy and disinclination to eat.”
Another statement about basic dog foods is, Dual reported about dog food that, “Commercial dog food or puppy food is
quite convenient to feed, but it can get boring to dogs if they have to eat the same diet every day. Boredom causes monotony effect
to dogs, a phenomenon where dogs refuse to eat even if they're extremely hungry.”
Being careful with what you feed your dog is important as well: “High-carbohydrate diet, given in place of protein, can cause a
high level aggression and mood swings in your dog while chemicals and additives can cause hyperactivity and allergy reaction.”
There have also been many tests proving diets can affect behavior. The main one is switching from protein to
carbohydrates creates aggressive behavior because protein gives more intense energy for dogs while tasting better.
This causes dogs to become frustrated with the change creating aggressive behavior. Also, facts have figured feeding
your dog on an irregular schedule or barely keeping by with meals will cause your dog to undoubtedly become
frustrated which causes aggressive behavior. Not only that but this will also cause your dog to form distrust with you
and become regularly agitated or become isolated from you which is an opposite of a dog's normal behavior which is
attention craving.
Calcium is a prime example of a nutrient that’s important to dogs. After being tested multiple times and
multiple dogs being tested if a dog's lack of calcium continues, they will become aggressive and agitated. This
commonly happens if dogs do not eat continuously. When dogs don’t get enough food in their bodies, they get a lack
of Calcium and other important vitamins and nutrients. This causes them to become aggressive and act isolated on
their own. All this evidence leads to the conclusion of, if dogs do get a lack of nutrients or lack of vitamin intake they
will begin to act more aggressive on a regular basis and act isolated an opposite of what a dogs normal behavior would
be.
This is a reputable and reliable article because it has input from multiple editors who have tested facts about dogs
behavior related to diet. And two of the editors are dieticians and vets.

In the first paragraph of the article Elsworthy states, “Those with canine and feline companionships were twice as
likely to consider themselves a success.”
Elsworthy also stated in this article, “Pet owners are more likely to be married, have a child, bag themselves a
university degree and have found their perfect job.”
Laughter is a key part in everyone’s life: “Researchers also found pets bring laughter to six in 10 owners, and seven in
10 feel more relaxed in their company.”
There is also strong evidence proving that having dogs increase your drive and increase your chance for
success in the future. For example, dog owners double the amount of exercise non-dog owners do. This proves, at least
to some degree, that having a dog around will give you more motivation to do things and be productive. Along these
same lines of reasoning, 80% of happily married families with at least 1 or more children have dogs. This shows that
dogs do bring around an aura of happiness and motivation that bring people’s attitudes up. And the last fact is 70% of
dogs serve as talking buddies that help relieve stress and anger built up inside of them. Dogs bring happiness around
with them!
Creating close bonds with a dog releases endorphins and oxytocin’s in your body. Endorphins and Oxytocins
are drugs released in your body which make you feel good. This is a main reason why therapy dogs are becoming more
and more common. Having dogs around make you feel better everyday and give a sense of relaxation at home. Dogs
boost peoples way of life and morale. It had been proven in many studies all favoring the side of being a dog owner.
Although financially they may cost a lot it is nothing compared to the amount of happiness and sense of belonging a
dog can give you.

On the first page of the article Reisen explains how therapy dogs should be trained, “They should have a calm
temperament, be unfazed by unfamiliar noises and movements, be comfortable being handled, and love people.”
Reisen explains that research, “ Has supported the notion that animals offer mental health benefits and help alleviate
psychological disorders.”
Raising your dog’s mood is a key reason why therapy dogs are so successful: “Studies have shown looking into a dogs
eyes boosts the production of dopamine and other neurochemicals in our body.”
This website gives information about the various benefits therapy dogs provide. Jan Reisen the author of this
article says that therapy dogs provide many benefits which help various patients. Mainly, therapy dogs help patients
battle mental disorders. This article is written by Jan Reisen a with help from therapy dog trainers who do studies on
the effects of therapy dogs and hospital patients. One example Reisen states is that research shows therapy dogs greatly
alleviate mental health problems and they can alleviate many different types of psychological disorders.
There are other examples of how therapy dogs are beneficial for patients. For example, many studies have
shown that just looking into a dog’s eyes boosts neurochemicals that fuel happiness in your body. This shows that
having a dog can make patients who are consistently sad and in care have a sense of happiness just by interacting with
a dog. Another example is how they help regulate emotions by being trained to show unconditional love and attending
to people’s needs. This leads to this impressive statistic that states that 97% of people who have had experience with
therapy dogs have left with positive impact.
Therapy dogs provide many good benefits for their patients and should be used more in care centers. Currently
therapy dogs are used in nearly every hospital depending on the situation of the patient and the hospital guidelines.
Currently 18% of adults in United States suffer from depression and anxiety so therapy dogs will eventually need to be
more included with hospitals plan to treat these individuals. Therapy dogs will become a big part in the cure to get that
18% of people to 0% in the future.
