PBS Shape Builder Exercise

lecular-shapes/

Before you begin:

1. What are covalent bonds? Do you have questions about how covalent bonds are
formed? A chemical bond where two electrons share pairs between atoms. No
2. Can you make a drawing that shows how electrons might be shared between

atoms?
3. Do you know where the electrons actually are in the molecules seen in the
activity? yes
4. Is it necessary to know the exact positions of the electrons to predict molecular
shapes? Why or why not? Yes it is necessary to know because the electrons could
be bonding or non bonding

During the Simulation:

1. Draw a structure for each shape of the demonstrations:

a.
b.
c.
d.
2. What happens when you adjust or move one of the bonds? The whole thing moves
along with it in the same direction
3. What are the angles each of the shapes adjusts to?
a. Linear: 180
b. Trigonal planar: 120
c. Tetrahedral: 109.5
4. Why is tetrahedral’s bond angles not 90 degrees? They won't be stable enough

After the simulation:

1. Why is it important to visualize these atoms in 3D space? So we can understand it

more and see more of it all around
2. Draw the best Lewis Dot Structure for each of the following species.

a) BeF2

b) BCl3

c) CCl4
d) PBr5

e) SI6

2. Give the name of the electronic arrangement and the name for the molecular
geometry for each of the species in question #1.
